Pieces of MAS by Walter Warton, 2010
Batik print samples collected from Fabric Vendors in Peckham - these were fabric sample offcuts collected from the area in an attempt to try and map an area through its use of textiles, obviously there is an awareness of the speculation and assumption involved within such a process which is why it unfortunately didn’t necessarily develop further throughout the project.
Thought this was an interesting statement, looking at western ideals placed on other cultures throughout society. Reflected within statements such as ‘where you grew up must have been so exotic’ or ‘you seem so different’ when people speak to me about my place identity and where I grew up which can make you feel as though your individual place identity is weird.
The A3 Poster of the pantones of the images I took from Brunei, this was based on a comment made within the WIP that harrison tweed is created through all the colours you can see from your window
Images from my time in Brunei, these images were compiled into a booklet that allowed me to develop a series of pantones of the colours of Brunei that I could use to adapt into textile for things like the Harrison Tweed fabric suggested in my WIP feedback by Joe Harrington

Adornment Of Identity
Images highlighting how people use the interface of the house/home to express forms of their own identity. Within this specific case I located the use of window as a form of self expression and political expression within the home. Obviously there are nationalistic connotations often associated with this, especially with the use of flags etc. An exploration into this allowed me to try and design a way in which form of expression and the fluidity of identity could be expressed more temporarily within urban spaces.
Further exploration and explanation of this can be located within my Context Report.

Rachel, this was a very interesting piece of work that attempts to weave the various methodological practices of qualitive interviewing, prototyping, co-creation, service design, and the construction of speculative dystopias together in a way that constructively illuminates your topic of the “fabric of identity”. Your initial recognition of the fact that this process is multivalent is well made. As are the thinkers that you have chosen to help you consider this process of “identity construction” - i.e. Foucault, Giddens, Boudieu and Lefebvre - well chosen. And indeed some more attention to some of this work might have helped you formulate an even more unequivocal statement of your question - particularly Lefebvre’s work on the “trialectic” nature of the structuration of identity and space. Your consideration of Supertanker’s ‘urban co-creation’ methods of immersive collaborative participation was particularly well considered and useful to the development of your thesis. I’m not quite sure how the observation of batik textiles in the textiles collection, and interviews with the locals, allowed you to truly “realise” the sense of place, or “genius loci” of its original indigenous context of production, and this probably needs some further explanation or exegesis. Your critique/analysis of the various mechanisms by which our contemporary atomistic or individualised concepts of identity or self are formed was well considered but probably could have benefitted from some further analysis of the mechanisms of the Marxist reading of this process, that you mention in passing, through an analysis of Louis Althusser’s and Guy Debord’s Work. But nonetheless a very well considered solid piece of work.
