@newsoftheuniverse - , "RWANDA SUCCESSFULLY TRANSFORMS POTENTIALLY DEADLY GAS-LADEN WATER INTO A SOURCE OF POWER" Underneath the lake lies a great menace to all who live near the giant lake: waters saturated with methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen suflide gas. If these gases were ever released, by say a small earthquake, volcanic eruption or growing pressure from the gases, the toxic combination could take out the lives of over two million people living along the lake's shores. This all began to change on December 31, 2015 when the first of many power plants was opened on the surface of Lake Kivu, drawing gas-laden waters and transforming it into purified gas to be sent back to the mainland where generators would be able to supply 25 megawatts of energy. In a developed country, 25 megawatts would be enough energy for 45,000 people, However in a largely rural country such as Rwanda, this amount of energy will be the future. On Monday, this power plant was officially inaugurated and by 2020, Rwandan President Paul Kagame plans to open up enough power plants to produce 100 megawatts of energy extracted from methane from Lake Kivu, nearly doubling the country's energy capacity. “If you think about Rwanda’s limited options for electricity, this is a great one. Because we are ameliorating the risk of methane release as well as generating power.” Read more about this fascinating story on Time.com ═══════════════ #space #universe #science #astronomy #physics #tech #technology #news #photo #photography #rwanda #energy #fuel #oil #sky #clouds #sunset ________________________________________ #nature #instagood #landscape #wonderful #nature_perfection #tourism #ig_great_pics #trip #travel #ig_great_shots #instapic #ig_captures #wonderful_places ______________________________________ (at Rwanda)
