James’ muscled tensed as Nathan laughed at him. There was a lot that he had little patience for, but being mocked or laughed at definitely made that list, which was another reason he disliked being around Nathan. Almost every conversation resulted in him being the butt of a joke, and he was tired of always seeing that smirk and feeling as though he was left out of something in a conversation between the two of them. James always prided himself on being intelligent, but his intellect wasn’t something he could use against Nathan, and it frustrated him more than he could say that his housemate wouldn’t just listen to reason. Instead everything was a silly game, and that was something James had never been as good at. “I’m not trying to make creative insults; I’m being honest,” James corrected, holding back an annoyed sigh. He found Nathan’s lack of boundaries infuriating, and he proved the stereotype true that actors thought far too highly of themselves. “There’s very little I find amazing about you,” he confirmed, though even that was a lie. There really wasn’t anything at all that he considered amazing about Nathan unless one could consider his relentlessness amazing. “The only thing that amazes me is how incapable you are of taking a hint.” The worst part was that James was sure Nathan had gotten all the hints; he just didn’t seem to care. Another actor stereotype: selfishness. He inhaled deeply, not wanting to let Nathan see him get too angry because he was sure the actor would only get satisfaction from knowing he could get under his skin so easily. There were a dozen reasons why that description did not describe Nathan, and even if there were any similarities, it was completely insignificant to the unfortunate relationship they already had. “You’re not worth the energy to hate,” he snapped before adding, “And I see very little of that description in you.” There was a slight hesitation as he contemplated answering Nathan’s question. He really had no right to know, and the last thing James needed was for Nathan to mock him. Though, oddly enough, Nathan seemed like the simplistic romantic type, so maybe knowing the truth would make him back off just a bit. “Yes,” he answered truthfully, not meeting Nathan’s eyes. “And she was nothing like you.”
Nathan raised his eyebrows as James told him there was nothing amazing about him, not because he was surprised by the answer or was hurt by it at all, but he didn’t take James to be a liar. Nathan was gorgeous, and anyone who thought otherwise was an idiot. Maybe James was the type of person to care more about someone’s personality than their looks, and it was more than clear that he didn’t like Nathan’s. A pity, really. “Oh, I can take a hint,” Nathan said in reply, resisting the urge to splash James. While the guy may be annoying, he was also fun to talk to, in his own way, and he didn’t want to scare him off. Even if he insulted Nathan left and right. Whatever, he could take it. “I just think you would be so bored without me around, so, really, I’m doing this for you,” he added with a grin.
Nothing James said really surprised Nathan anymore, and him saying that the description he just gave Nathan sounded nothing like him was no different. It was obvious James didn’t care to get to know Nathan, so he only knew what Nathan showed him, and that wasn’t much at all. It was definitely half of Nathan’s fault, as he only showed James his playful and teasing side, but that didn’t mean that was all he was. Nathan had a lot of sides to him, though, he wasn’t sure James would ever see them. “I’m surprised you try to get to know anyone at all to figure out if they fit your dream person fantasy or not,” Nathan said, no malice in his words.
Nathan knew that his next words had to be very calculated because he knew the wrong tone or word would set James off, and this conversation would be over. It was a big enough step that James was answer his question at all, so he had to play it safe. Which was not all the way Nathan played anything. “So, she wasn’t perfect in every way, got it,” Nathan said jokingly before letting his expression turn as serious as he could. “When did you meet her?”
