Hello all, Jake here!
I know, it’s been awhile since I’ve posted on here. After Midnight Channel: The Musical ended it’s run and we had a successful staged reading of our second show, Like Dying Things Do, Gina and I went on a bit of a writing hiatus while she started a new job and I went off to school.
Over the last two years, I wanted to practice honing in on my own lyrical ability, since Gina had always written lyrics for me. From that, I put together an original song cycle entitled “The Outs and Ins: A Study in the Ineffable” and even started going by the writing name, Jacob Ryan Smith. My show premiered with a full cast and orchestra on April 17th, 2018 at The University of Michigan. We’re now releasing multiple videos from that show to debut the work.
This is “To Be A Man” performed by the incredible Blake Bojewski. I hope you guys like it, and I’m so excited to be showing you my work again!

Interactivity – Video Games & Theater (Ft. Brenda Laurel) | ShortOneGaming
Jake analyzes the similarities between Video Games and Theater through the lens of interactivity. He also sings a little bit. It’s good.
Special thanks to Brenda Laurel, an amazing mind in both gaming and virtual reality, for being interviewed and discussing her experiences with interactivity.
Hell and Back | a critical role fan song
Music by Jake Smith ( @jakesmithsings ) Lyrics by Gina Smith ( @floatslikebricks ) Performance by Elizabeth Garber
‘Hell and Back’ is based on Critical Role’s episode 72, ‘The Elephant in the Room.’ This episode features a pivotal moment for Vex'ahlia, as she reflects on her struggles with self worth, her resolution towards forgiveness, and the recent loss and resurrection of Percy.
It’s an amazing moment, and we hoped to capture some of the tension and character growth with a little musical theater flair!

The First 15 Minutes | ShortOneGaming
What impact does the first 15 minutes of a game have on the overall experience - and how can these few minutes be used to set the tone for your game? Jake analyzes the first 15 minutes of The Last Guardian, Thumper, and Clash of Clans, and looks at how tutorialization and tonal introduction can set the stage for a player and a wider audience.
Hey guys! I made a thing and I’m super proud of it. I’ve been wanting to make analytical videos like this for awhile so if you like it, let me know!

Music by Jake Smith ( @jakesmithsings ) Lyrics by Gina Smith ( @floatslikebricks ) Performance by Jake Smith
We have wanted to write a musical theater style tribute to Critical Role for quite some time. ‘willing’ is based on the 44th episode, ‘The Sunken Tomb’, which was, without a doubt, one of the most powerful and plot-rocking moments in the whole show.

Best Guess : Undertale and Suicide
Undertale is a game where the player is constantly given a choice - kill or don’t kill. Fight or Spare. But, as a player in Undertale, your choice between life and death does not only extend to your opponents - it is a choice you must make for yourself and your own character throughout the game.
tl;dr - Why is suicide a constant theme throughout Undertale, and how does it affect the player’s experience with the game?
