First off, Happy Friday. I hear that it’s raining in Sacramento (I’m currently in Vegas) so hopefully most of you have decided to “work from home.” 😂 I’m returning from attending @wppievents which I go to EVERY YEAR! If you’re a “content creator” and not going to this event, YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON A TON OF INFORMATION AND INSPIRATION—everything from photo to video, post production, business, social media, industry trends, new tech, you name it, IT IS HERE! As creators we may from time to time get in a mental rut and this is where you should come to get out of it. Despite there being many photographers that come here to WPPI, it never feels like a competition amongst each other but A COMMUNITY of motivators and supporters! You also get to meet your favorite photo brand ambassador and YouTube influencer in-person. When I come across my favorites, I have a tendency of geeking out, typically forget the English language, and form a decent smile. 🤣 As an instructor at Sacramento City College, I come back with a wealth of knowledge which I am so excited to share with my students but also excited to have made important vendor connections with @canonusa, @hahnemuehle_global and @luminar_global (AI technology). Here’s a recent snap of @avafgrace using all constant lights—Aputure 300d. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with “video” lights to capture still-images. I’ve also been exploring with “color” and “color temperatures” to set the mood of the image. I’m really enjoying using this method (using constants) because it sets the tone (pun intended) on set. It allows the talent to play up the vibe of the “character” we were trying to portray. Happy Friday fellow creatives! Just wanted to share a recent portrait sesh with the super talented and down-to-earth @avafgrace. It’s been many years since graduating from the photography program at Sac State and one of the things I’ve been longing is doing a contemporary-portrait series. Well, with the new year here, I said to myself JUST DO IT. So to kick it off, here’s a little teaser of the concept/lighting test. There will be an accompanying behind the scenes video which I will be sharing as the project unfolds but will also be shared in my Lighting II (Advanced Lighting) class at Sac City College. While most of my work is in the editorial and commercial realm, I do want to enter the fine-art space and put on a gallery show. I’m drawing inspirations from several contemporary artists including Gregory Crewdson’s cinematic themes as well as Dan Winters! Alright, that’s all for now! Another published image for SacMag featuring Darcy Totten, Director of Communications for (CCSWG) California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls. 📸 Ryan Angel Meza Aside from her expansive resume and leadership roles, Darcy is just an awesome person to chat with—very down to earth, approachable, humorous, sincere and just knowledgeable. You definitely want Darcy to be in your corner for any advocacy matters! When I photographed Darcy, I really had limited options given the weather and office space but fortunately they had this amazing picture-poster that showcased women protesting. I was compelled to use it as the backdrop to signify the voices of women who have paved the way for equal rights and inclusivity. Darcy joined CCSWG in 2019 as the Director of Communications. She has over 20 years of experience in crisis communications, journalism, public policy, and external affairs. Darcy led the external affairs efforts of the first-of-its-kind Women’s Recovery Response grant project, building partnerships and developing the #WomenAreEssential campaign to raise awareness and support for the needs of women in the ongoing pandemic. Darcy also holds a bachelor’s degree from Mills College in Photography and Visual Communication and a master’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin in Journalism. Hewo!! It’s been a minute since I’ve posted anything here. Most of my fingers are still frozen from the cold weather. Geez, can spring weather come sooner? 🏍️ I hope everyone is doing good and started their new year with resilience!! However if you are lacking that, just follow @thelizarmy for a dose of that!! Recent work. | Sac Mag | August 2022 | 📷 Ryan Angel Meza | ✍️Sasha Abramsky Special thanks for @charlesvictorstudio for assisting me through out this project. 🤠 Article: “WELCOME” Sacramento's Ukrainian community has burst into action in recent months to help refugees and friends and family back home. • • During my time with Lika Roiko, she shared with me stories that were devastating to hear as well as her own frustration with bureaucracies that further exacerbates hardship and mental stress on incoming Ukrainian immigrants. Lika has such an amazing soul. She spends most of her time helping Ukrainian immigrants with applying for city and state resources while serving SOL church as a volunteer. She is also committing her time as a college student which is astonishing for me because of the amount of stress one endures with that alone. Despite all that, she remains hopeful and tackles each day with a smile. For 9 year old Valeria Tyshenko, a Ukrainian immigrant who recently moved to Sacramento for refuge with her mother and father, may perhaps never look out a window the same way again after witnessing carnage of warfare. Dale Collins, is a Penn Valley, Calif.-based exercise physiologist and owner of online platform Achieving Fitness After 50.
