DESIGN / COLISEUM / BLACK GOD / WHIPS/CHAINS / MORE RYAN PATTERSON is a graphic designer and visual artist from Louisville, Kentucky, known for his dense, instantly recognizable collage-based artwork. Patterson utilizes digital and physical tools to create hypnotic imagery with a proclivity for symmetry and a fixation on the dark and mysterious aspects of popular culture. Inspired equally by the cut-n-paste, photocopied aesthetic of early punk/hardcore and the cluttered kitsch of '60s and '70s exploitation film posters, Patterson blends elements of both in his work. Patterson is perhaps most recognized for his role as the founding member of the band Coliseum, where, in addition to his position as singer, guitarist and songwriter, he is responsible for the band’s acclaimed album and t-shirt art. He has designed countless records and shirts for bands across the globe, including Avail, Tim Barry, Converge, Doomriders, The Exploding Hearts, From Ashes Rise, Kylesa, Mono, Red Sparowes, Russian Circles, Torche, Trap Them, Victims, and Young Widows, among many others. Patterson is also a member of the bands Black God and Whips/Chains.
On May 5, Black God is playing our first show in over a year and I'm very happy to bring my friend J. Robbins to play Louisville for the first time in fifteen years. This is among the first shows with J.'s new four piece rock band, playing new songs and old favorites, and featuring powerhouse drummer Pete Moffett of Burning Airlines and GI. I'm really stoked for this show.
First Friday reception tonight from 6-9pm at the Green Building Gallery (732 E. Market, Louisville) for Functions In Two Dimensions: The Art And Design Of Ron Jasin And Ryan Patterson. This Friday, April 1st, there will be another reception for the Functions In Two Dimensions art show with work by Ron Jasin and me. It's from 6-9pm as part of the First Friday trolley hop. If you missed the first reception or just want to come hang with me while yuppies and normals filter through, then please come out. The gallery is also open every day and the show has been extended an additional week if you'd like to see it at any other time. #dieyuppiescum
A couple of old favorites in the Functions art show. Left: Infinite painting on wood, a personal favorite I've kept for myself. The design was used as part of Coliseum's Infinite t-shirt and other imagery during the House With A Curse era. Right: The World Is Coming To An End painting on wood, as apt now as ever, which is still for sale. It's nice and rough, I imagine it sticking out of a pile of dirt in a post-apocalyptic landscape (or B-movie set).
More pieces from the Functions In Two Dimensions show. Left: Master/Slave 24x24" painting on wood from 2011, later used as the cover for the Whips/Chains EP of the same name (with the roses redrawn by @bensears), from the collection of @xo_madisyn. Right: Collapse 24x48" giclee print new for this show, from the collage and artwork I created for the @deathwishinc version of the Kylesa & Victims split 7" years ago. It's been one of my favorites for many years and I decided to finally make a print for this show. If it doesn't sell during the gallery run I may offer it for sale here, although it will be hard to part with it.
Cat Magic Punks is a go! catmagicpunks.com @catmagicpunks If you're in Louisville come to the Green Building Gallery tomorrow night (3/12) from 6-9pm for the Functions In Two Dimensions show opening, the shirts and print will also be available for sale there along with other pieces.
I'm happy to announce my new art and apparel project @catmagicpunks which will kick off at my joint art show at Louisville's Green Building Gallery this month. The opening reception is Saturday March 12th from 6-9pm. I'm sharing the show with my old friend Ron Jasin. I'll be showing two new Cat Magic Punks shirts, this new 20x20" print, as well as other new and retrospective pieces. Look for the print and shirts to be available online worldwide the week following the reception.
The "Anxious Echo" pedal from Abominable Electronics that I designed and that was built to my specifications is available again. The pedal was originally released as part of a very limited edition with Coliseum's Anxiety's Kiss album preorder last year and Abominable is now selling them again with the non-limited silver and black artwork. The pedal features an "Anxious" switch for vintage octave fuzz and "Echo" for spacey delay, the two true bypass switches enable you to use each effect separately or both together. It's literally two of their pedals in one. They are having special sales today, check it out at abominableelectronics.com
L7 screen printed poster design commissioned by Atelier Du Grand Chic for Hellfest France 2015. Very cool to design for L7, a band I listened to in high school and saw with Ink & Dagger at Sudsy's in Cincinnati years ago.
At The Gates screen printed poster design commissioned by Atelier Du Grand Chic for Hellfest France 2015. An honor to design for such an incredible band.
I'm very honored to be interviewed by my old friend and early mentor Mark Brickey for his excellent Adventures In Design podcast. He asked me about a very wide range of topics and hit some very deep points that surprised me in a way only a person you've known for twenty years could. Check it out on iTunes by searching Ryan Patterson, Coliseum or Adventures In Design. You can stream it at their homepage of AdventuresInDesignMarket. Listen to Dark Entries tonight from 8-10pm EST at www.darkentriesradio.com we'll be playing almost entirely current bands, celebrating the present and the future, on our last live broadcast episode.
I haven't had time lately to do a lot of design outside of Coliseum work for the new album and related materials, but I was honored and stoked to be asked to do a new shirt for Wolfbrigade. I was also very happy they wanted to join the Shirt Killer roster and sell the shirt there, as well as more shirts in the future. It's very cool when bands you've been listening to for many years reach out and ask you to create imagery for them and trust you with handling these things for them. It always means a lot to me. You can preorder this tee now at www.shirtkiller.com/wolfbrigade
