Hello computer-based artists & designers! I am seeking remote research participants.
As a part of my thesis research w/ Lifelong Kindergarten at MIT Media Lab, I created a mac app that automatically takes screenshots of your laptop (at a customizable interval of time) and dumps them in a folder for you. This is meant to help you track and reflect on your process for making things on a computer. Wow wow wow!
I just spent the weekend at the Harvard i-Lab / IDEO make-a-thon. What an awesome weekend. My team was Katini (Biology major from Kenya), Avinash (MBA from India), and Maja (Policy major from Croatia), and myself. We designed a micro-loan network for communities, focusing on students.
Before I get into the nitty gritty, here's the best hits list of things I learned, or had clarified/refreshed:
prototypes are meant to answer a question (how good a prototype is = (how much you can learn)/(how long it took you))
focusing on the end user can refocus what matters
think about the lifecycle of a product. Is your app used on the toilet, or right when someone wakes up?
Here's a breakdown of what you see above in the photos. For each prototype, we built the simplest thing we could manage to facilitate a discussion about assumptions.
Q: What should we make? Who is our user? A: A college student who has a cool opportunity for the summer, but they can't support it independently. We want to give her an experience that isn't embarrassing and feels more like a "compatibility network".
Q: Would people feel more comfortable putting their money towards a specific item, than contributing funds to a general plan? A: Yes! and people liked to express themselves through what they chose.
Q: How much value would a company assign to a social currency payment? A: Companies would want to know a lot of complex data about that person - let's simplify our revenue plan to just people paying back other people with money so we can prototype more.
Q: How do we display all the information to help people find each other? A: People want to sort it in all different kinds of ways, so it's important to make it easy for them to sort by multiple criteria.
Q: How could we onboard users in a fun, empowering way? (focusing back on the emotional value of our fabricated user). A: Birthday card is an interesting idea, but rather than giving the person money to invest on the platform, it would be more exciting to receive money that get's a campaign rolling.
Q: How does it feel when we make it real? A: People want to know about how to track reliability of users, and the lending side more.

Portfolio Structuring
I got some really good advice about my portfolio, but I think it could be useful to anyone designing a portfolio in general, so I thought I'd copy-paste it here.
Tabitha: Well, the format that in my experience has worked best has been:
1) A hero shot/demo of the thing you built in all its beautiful well-executed glory, 2) a clear statement/question of the problem you'd sought to solve, and then 3) an overview of your process, sketches, user testing, and iterations to get to the solution you did -- just enough to indicate your process, doesn't have to go into great paragraphs of detail. Every stage should be well-considered, and also exemplify your grasp of visual/type hierarchy. If you nail all of those things, it's usually enough to land you an interview as a product designer!
Since you're a generalist, I'd say more importantly, it helps to surface / have a clear way to surface clear examples of your work that's relevant to the job you're applying for. So if you're looking for UX/UI positions, you should have a way call those projects out explicitly, cuz those are the first projects employers will likely look at before diving more into your other projects that indicate your range of thinking
Ryan: How many projects does the average recruiter look at before they've made up their mind?
Tabitha: It doesn't take many -- one super solid project (like if you designed it from beginning to end), or two pretty substantial projects, should do fine

This is the second testing that we did of the adult-scale my body band prototype. Sorry for the vertical video!
Some insights that we got from this prototype were:
It is way fun to dance to a beat, but the beat should probably be simple to let the solo shine through.
The threshold rate of movement should be higher, because sometimes Abby seemed unsure if she was the one responsible for the sound, or if was just latency in the suit.
