Here’s one of my favorite images from “Overview” - Venice, Italy. The city is situated upon 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by bridges. With its tide waters expected to rise to perilous levels, the city has constructed 78 giant steel gates across the three inlets, through which water from the Adriatic could surge into Venice’s lagoon. The panels – which weigh 300 tonnes and are 92 feet (28 meters) wide and 65 feet (20 meters) high – are fixed to massive concrete bases dug into the seabed.

Atlas Obscura made this terrific visual comparison of athletic feats across the animal kingdom. The human animal’s performance is decidedly lackluster.

In the 1930s, infographic pioneer Otto Neurath designed a similar visual comparison of lifespans across the animal kingdom.

This is normally when we talk about what was trending this week. Video games, pop music, dumb jokes. Lots of that stuff happened this week. This just isn’t the week for it.

Philando Castile was fatally shot in his car by a police officer who stopped him for a broken taillight.

Alton Sterling was fatally shot in front of a convenience store by a police officer who had him pinned to the ground.

A civilian and twelve police officers were shot, five of them fatally, by sniper fire in Dallas during protests related to these shootings.

What can we do? Listen to the voices of those affected. Resist the temptation to be passive. Care and focus that care.
