“That’s…the stupidest reasoning i’ve ever heard. But whatever I guess. You want to fuck up your hearing, that’s on you.” she shrugged with a frown. Already she realized that there was no way that she was going to enjoy working with the kid. “Yeah, that’s me. We’re going to need to get started on the project as soon as possible.”

“Good thing I never asked for your input,” Ryan crossed his arms across his chest, the smirk on his face telling her he placed no value on her opinion, while the voices inside his head told a different story. What’s got her so wound up? “Okay, great. Sure. Got any ideas?”

Monica stared at the boy in front of her. She was almost completely sure that he was her partner in geology. Or at least she thought he was. To be quite honest, she hadn’t even bothered to get his name after they were partnered. “I asked” she began, a frown evident on her face. “Whether or not you were my assigned geology partner.” she repeated. “Don’t you know loud music will make you lose your hearing?”

“Oh. Maybe,” Ryan answered. He reached into his back pocket for the paper with his partner’s name scrawled across the top. “Would you be Monica?” he asked with raised eyebrows. When she asked if he knew the effects of loud music, he couldn’t help but laugh. “Maybe. Oh well. I’m here for a good time, not a long time.”

“Oh!” Well, now she felt stupid for not noticing the headphones. “Sorry, I didn’t see the…” she gestured vaguely at her ear. “I just wanted to give you a heads up, they closed this hallway for cleaning,” she said, pointing behind her. “Spill in the chem lab.” A spill that Maya may or may not have had a hand in, but he didn’t have to know that part. “So you’ll have to go around.” 

“Spill in the chem lab? What kind of spill in the chem lab?” Ryan questioned, unable to hide the curiosity from seeping into his tone. He’d have to go around? Where was the fun in that? “How’s that for my luck? First time down this hallway, and it’s closed.”

There was a certain spring in his step as Ryan strut through the hallway, headphones blasting music at a ridiculously high volume. So high he completely missed whatever the person blocking his path was trying to tell him. He pulled one of the headphones from his right ear, the music still playing loudly in his left. “I’m sorry, I didn’t hear a word you just said,” Ryan laughed. “Come again?”
