Critical Role fanfic recs

Apparently September 15th is CritRole fanfic rec, and there are recommendations going around.

I don’t have many, but there are two ongoing modern AU fanfics that I follow and greatly enjoy for the believable group dynamics and one short fic that I haven’t seen recommended yet. All of them are based on the Mighty Nein campaign and all are Caleb x Fjord to different degrees.

Not a Patron, Not a Benefactor by @ryebreadwrites​ – a completely non-magical college AU based on this post, where Fjord is a struggling university student and his roommate’s older brother decides to help him out. It follows the dynamic of the early episodes where Fjord admires Caleb for his magical talent, except instead of magic it’s obscure Shakespeare critique. Very cute slow-ish burn, very nice nerdy flirting (what other kind would anyone even want anyway), and very relatable financial slash socializing-while-a-university-student struggles. The group has fleshed-out relationships outside of the romantic storyline, and Fjord’s POV is very believable and extremely relatable. Greatly recommend!

The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Widogast by @erebones​ – a magical realism modern AU where the Mighty Nein is a group of older-twenty-somethings on a summer camping trip. This is honestly all I’ve ever wanted from fiction. The descriptive style is amazing, the plot is gripping, the voices are spot-on and the relationships in the group are just… so… effortlessly tender? It captures the love shared by the cast themselves so perfectly that I want to print it out as a relationship guide for myself and hang it on the wall as a reminder and a future to aspire to. Again, cannot recommend it enough.

dry drowning by ashinan – an extremely tactile (of a mostly non-romantic and definitely no higher than PG-13 intimacy variety) fic about Fjord disappointing his patron and almost drowning on land, and Caleb helping him in the aftermath. A very cute and heartwarming pick-me-up, and, honestly, Caleb using Frumpkin to comfort his friends is a trope that the world needs more of.
