The carriage wheel was broken, and Rylan’s father was quite angry. All the kids were huddled under their dad’s large cloak. Rylan being the oldest wrapped his little sisters Lynn, and Catherine close to his body to keep the biting wind from catching their faces. The large man combed calloused fingers, dirtied from hulling the large object up against his shoulder through his beard in thought. Glancing to his children with a look that made Rylan worried they wouldn’t make it to Richmond today like they hoped.
“Dad, is the spare not working?” he asked, Catherine’s lean fingers were digging into his side as she snuggled against his warmer body and Rylan chuckled a bit while he shifted the large article of clothing off his shoulders and around both his sisters. The weather wasn’t terrible by way of temperature this spring day but the wind was abnormal and strong today. It had been what caused the carriage to blow up on its two wheels and snapped the back one from all the weight.
No, the piece to the axle won’t let me put the new one on- I need to walk ahead and see if I can find one. There are a few cabins around here, someone will have a piece I need. Bring your sisters over here, stay by the carriage. Don’t talk to anyone, and if you see someone approach you hide. You hear me son? Don’t talk to them.
Rylan nodded. His heart suddenly fluttering in fright of being left out here alone. His father was a strong, powerful man of manual labor. Having both worked in London for woodworking, and Richmond as a Lumberjack. Mr. Ianson had only passed on subtle things like his nose and crooked smile to Rylan, he was his mothers son through and through. Beauty in hazel eyes, and a youthful attraction that would carry through his years. His dad pressed a dagger into his hands.
“I’m scared–” he said once his father was close enough, his sisters moving to the taller grasses not aware of the danger they were putting themselves in. “Maybe I can go instead? I can run fast Father, I know the part…"
I won’t be gone but a few minutes. You protect your sisters alright? This road is off the main, and guards sometimes travel it to be sure of its safety out of Norwich to Nottingham. You will fine just be on alert alright?
Mr. Ianson took off in powerful stride up the road before his son could object. Rylan knew his dad was right. That with Nottingham being so close that the guards would be along the road in shifts, but he didn’t see any now. Taking a deep breath he put on his best smile, and moved towards his sisters hoping to distract them while they waited.
"Lynn want to make dad a flower crown for when he comes back? I bet you he will wear it…”
