Quick Tips on Writing Character Development
Development should feel natural, not forced. Give them a reason for why they’ve changed.
Figure out who your character is at the beginning and who they are at the end. Once you know this, learn what happened in the middle that made them who they are at the end.
Don’t tell the reader that the character has gone through development. If you did it right, the reader should be able to tell that they have developed without you having to say so.
Your character should be a different person at the end than they are at the beginning.
Character development should be subtle, not obvious, and it must be earned. If your character doesn’t have a reason to change, then you haven’t earned their development.
The reason why characters develop is because they are learning. Sometimes this development is good for the character. Other times, what they learn is detrimental.
It’s full of chocolate covered cherries, I swear.
