Virginia Woolf, from a letter to Vanessa Bell, featured in The Selected Letters of Virginia Woolf
For long i was a firm believer in the absolute primacy of reason. But I've come to realise that what actually sets humans apart is NOT reason.
What truly distinguishes humans is:
a) recursive language
Ability to encode abstract models, transmit concepts and build institutions.
b) symbolic cognition
We can treat representations (symbols) like real things.
c) hyper-social brain
Our intelligence evolved for cooperation, gossip, alliances, status, narrative and not just pure logic.
d) cumulative culture
Each generation builds on the last.
e) imagination and simulation
Massive prefrontal networks for scenario building.
f) complex intentionality
We can model what others think about what we think.
Reason is just one subroutine inside this enormous architecture.
Meaning, desire, purpose. All three originate in systems older and deeper than logic.
Reason is a servant, not a master.
