Choice feminism truly is a defeatist ideology. According to this idea, women can escape power imbalances, violence, and oppression not by changing anything about their physical situation but by changing their attitude towards it. So if a woman recontextualizes her oppression into something she wants, it ceases to be oppressive and the societal forces that lead to this situation become irrelevant.
This method of āfeminismā can feel like itās removing oppression while not actually doing any work to grapple with the material reality and power imbalances involved with patriarchy. If the subjective experience or claims about the subjective experience are all that matters, the task to escape oppression becomes the task to somehow influence or brainwash every oppressed individual into being happy with their position, or even just get them to say the words āyes, Iām okay with thisā even if they truly arenāt.
True power and freedom can never be obtained this way.
