Reflection Statement.

Entering this course I lacked any knowledge to the roots of this complex area of design, and felt it my duty to change this. In saying that I have learnt through this subject that there are many histories to communication design, and the western one is misconceived as the only. However the topics covered through out this course lead me in the right direction to understanding this field that I one day would like to work in. 

For someone with an interest in typography i loved the focus on its history, and the parallels drawn between todays and ancient forms. However this was not the only topic that intrigued me, constantly leaving lectures with a new discovery whether that be the preciousness of incunabula, the range of talent present within the Bauhaus movement, or the diversity within the world of artist books. 

I found the workshops to be a brilliant source of inspiration for assignments, developing skills and knowledge that were very valuable to all kinds of projects, from zine making, to research and group work skills. Thanks to communication design studies I have gained a set of knowledge and skills that I will carry with me through the rest of my studies and career.

ASK ME ANYTHING PROJECT. 

Following the advice I had received during our last workshop I got to work on a new front cover and then began to rearrange my text and images. I decided to illustrate an image of Luke Lucas and accompany it with a very simple and non decorative typeface. I feel I succeeded to apply the skills from the same field of work as my creative, while creating a piece that did not cover a similar style to them. In regards to the text and images I was inspired by magazine layouts, some which were Lukes, seen in a magazine of his named Lifelounge. I found that working with a zine was a really nice and subtle way to draw a connection to my artists world.

In preparation for the final class today I printed off my nearly complete zine in order to get some feedback from either Karen or Andy. After scrolling endlessly through my creative’s work I had been experimenting with type trying to create a work that represented Luke Lucas’ world. How ever thanks to Andy’s advice it came to my attention that I had created a work too similar to Luke’s.

18/5/18 Here are a few snippets of the zine Hun and I made, My New Car, during todays session on learning how to use the Indesign templates. This was really useful for me as I had been a bit confused on how to know what page goes where prior to the fold, therefore I really appreciated this session. Thanks Karen and Andy :)

11/5/18 Working with ‘Franken-Models’ today I decided to look into the idea of creating packaging for my zine as I have always thought zines with extra components like this made the reading experience more exciting. I ended up creating a pizza box like home for my zine, and it took me back to a lecture earlier in the year on artists books, and reminded me in particular of the ‘The Thing Quarterly’.

Here is a walk through of the zine that my table created in todays workshop. I have definitely been loving these zine making classes as although I have got my head around the whole folding and trimming process, I still have a lot to learn in regards to where everything should go. I found working really freely like this made for some very interesting layouts, and really emphasised the effect of one image to a page. ( Thanks Hun for these photos :)!)

27/4/18 In preparation for the creation of our ‘Ask me Anything’ assignment we had a workshop on how to create zines, learning various ways of how to fold them at different sizes and thicknesses. Personally this was very helpful for me as I plan to present my interview as a zine.

This week we left the classroom in order to find letterforms within our environment at RMIT, to create the RMITABC. Here’s an example of a V that our group found. Looking forward to being able to use the web app!

As looked at in the lecture this week here are works of Luca Pacioli, showing the use of a grid in typography in order to understand the geometry of a perfect letterform. Along with again the use of a grid in describing the proportions of a human head. 

Such use of grids in typography also seen in works by Francesco Torniello da Novara, Geoffroy Tory and in Louis Simonneau's Romain Du Roi.

Using just coloured geometric shapes in this work shop our task was to create a geometric typeface. 

We begun with just one shape and then once complete were then given another set of shapes to incorporate until we had a typeface made up of 3 different shapes of different colours. I found that each time a shape was added our type face seemed to gain sophistication and legibility.

Following the submission of assignment 1, in this work shop it was our task to create a pop up exhibition. After some serious brain storming our group decided that the escalators would be perfect, allowing our audience to be taken through the exhibition effortlessly.

Whilst flicking through the melways to find letterforms for assignment 1 I kept coming across small sections like these that i found really nice looking.

This week our task was to create a pangram using two different methods both with different constraints on time. 

Firstly we created our pangram out of string, this forced us to use a cursive type face continuing the line even in spaces between words. Given only a short amount of time to finish our work it was teamwork that got us to the finish line; one would be shaping the letters, another two holding them down so our string wouldn't wriggle out of shape, and another coaching from above to ensure legibility. 

Our next task was to write our Pangram using brushes and water on the hot concrete outside, while as a medium the brush is more efficient at producing type, it was impossible for one of us to write the whole sentence without it drying up. Luckily some fellow RMIT students came past and ended up giving us a couple of helping hands, leading to the idea of one word of the sentence per person. In the end this gave us a very visually interesting product due the variety of different handwriting, while also giving our pangram readability.
