How Fry and Leela remind me of Aang and Katara

Honestly, Aang and Katara have always reminded me a little bit of Fry and Leela, and not just because they're iconic animated couples.

Fry accidentally freezes himself, wakes up a thousand years in the future, and finds himself completely alone in a world he doesn't understand. Then he meets Leela. She's one of the first people to show him kindness, the first person he really connects with, and she ends up becoming his anchor in this strange new life.

Aang's story is surprisingly similar. He wakes up after a hundred years to discover everyone he's ever known is gone. Then he meets Katara. She's the first person to show him compassion, the first person he truly bonds with, and she becomes his anchor in a world that no longer feels familiar.

In both stories, the guy falls first. Fry's feelings for Leela are obvious almost immediately, just like Aang's feelings for Katara. But Leela and Katara don't start out in the same place emotionally. They care deeply about these boys, but their love develops more gradually.

And I think that's what I like about both relationships.

Neither Leela nor Katara suddenly wake up one day and realize they're in love. Their feelings grow because they spend years (Leela) and Months (Katara) seeing who these guys really are.

Leela watches Fry prove again and again that beneath all the immaturity and goofiness is someone incredibly loyal and selfless. Someone who would do anything for the people he loves.

Katara watches Aang do the same. She sees his kindness, his optimism, his compassion, and his refusal to give up on people even when it would be easier to. She sees someone who can make her laugh when she's stressed and someone she can lean on when things become overwhelming.

And somewhere along the way, friendship slowly turns into something deeper.

I've always liked that neither relationship is built around two people falling in love at exactly the same time. One person falls first, and the other person gets there through years (Leela) and Months (Katara) of trust, affection, and shared experiences.

And I think that's part of why both couples resonate with so many people.

At the very core though, Fry and Aang are both hopeless romantics who wake up in a future that isn't theirs and find home again in the person who helps them rebuild their lives.

And Leela and Katara eventually discover that the person who had been beside them all along had quietly become the person they couldn't imagine living without.

There's something really beautiful about that.

Katara's Autonomy

One of the strangest Zutara arguments I've seen is the idea that Katara choosing Aang somehow undermines her autonomy, while choosing Zuko would somehow be a stronger expression of it.

The problem is that this argument completely falls apart the moment you remember that Katara is the one making the decision.

Nobody forces Katara to be with Aang. Not Sokka. Not the Aang. Not destiny. Not the Avatar Spirit. Nobody. The ending literally ends with Katara walking over to Aang and kissing him. That's her choice.

What's weird is that some people spend so much time talking about Katara's agency that they end up taking it away from her. If Katara says she wants Aang, and your response is "No, she'd be happier with Zuko," that's not respecting her autonomy. That's overriding it. You're essentially arguing that Katara doesn't understand her own feelings as well as the audience does. And that's where the logic starts getting really shaky.

Katara is one of the most strong willed characters in the entire franchise. This is the girl who stood up to Master Pakku. The girl who challenged centuries of Water Tribe tradition. The girl who regularly argued with authority figures when she thought they were wrong. The girl who told people exactly what she thought for three straight seasons.

But somehow we're supposed to believe she got confused about who she wanted to be with? Really? If Katara had romantic feelings for Zuko, the show had every opportunity to establish them. Instead, after "The Southern Raiders," Katara's trust in Zuko grows, but her romantic trajectory remains pointed at Aang. That's what actually happens in the story. The irony is that Katara's autonomy isn't evidence for Zutara. It's evidence against a lot of Zutara arguments.

Because once you acknowledge Katara as an independent character with agency, you also have to acknowledge that she independently chose Aang. You don't have to like that choice. You don't have to prefer that choice.

But if you're going to argue that Katara's agency matters, then her choice has to matter too. Otherwise "Katara's autonomy" stops being an argument and starts becoming a slogan that's only brought up when people disagree with the decision she made.

Why Katara and Aang works so well

One thing I think people miss about Aang and Katara is that their relationship doesn't work because they're opposites

It works because they're exactly what the other person needs

Aang spent his entire life carrying impossible expectations

He was told he was the Avatar before he was ready

Lost his people

Lost his childhood

Had the weight of the world dropped on his shoulders at twelve years old

Katara is one of the only people in his life who consistently lets him just be Aang

Not the Avatar

Not the world's savior

Just Aang

She comforts him when he's scared

Laughs with him

Supports him when he doubts himself

And reminds him that he's still a person underneath all that responsibility

But people often stop there and forget what Aang does for Katara

Katara spent most of the series taking care of everyone else

Sokka

Aang

Toph

Appa

The group as a whole

She constantly puts other people's needs ahead of her own

Even when she's hurting

Aang is one of the few people who actively tries to take care of her too

He makes her laugh

Pulls her out of her stress

Encourages her to have fun

Believes in her completely

And reminds her that she doesn't always have to be the strong one

That's why so many of their scenes work

They're not just helping each other save the world

They're helping each other carry emotional burdens

Aang brings lightness into Katara's life

Katara brings stability into Aang's life

Aang helps Katara loosen her grip on the weight she's carrying

Katara helps Aang stay grounded when the weight of being the Avatar threatens to crush him

And what makes it even better is that their relationship is built on friendship first

They spend three seasons learning each other's fears

Flaws

Dreams

Traumas

Strengths

By the time they get together they know each other better than almost anyone else in the world

Neither of them is trying to change the other

Katara doesn't want Aang to stop being optimistic

Aang doesn't want Katara to stop being compassionate

They love those things about each other

The relationship isn't built on drama

It's built on trust

Mutual admiration

Emotional support

And genuine affection

Honestly that's why it has lasted for so many fans

Not because it's perfect

But because it feels like two people who make each other's lives better simply by being in them

Zutara shippers will never cope with Aang and Katara's relationship

I've yet to see a great take regarding Katara and Aang's relationship coming from Zutaras. They constantly invent new and far fetched talking points to make Aang and Katara's (Canon) Relationship seem like it's forced. They point out that there's no conflict between. Why would there be conflict when they're relationship was built on trust first. He saved her village from Zuko and the fire nation the first day they met. Yes Aang fell first but isn't that a common theme in slow burn relationships, someone has to fall first and the other later. Think Futurama, fry spent years trying to get Leela's attention. The fact of the matter is atla takes place in the matter of months. Was it love at first sight for Aang absolutely. Katara was different she didn't fall in love with Aang in a single moment, she fell over time.

Kataangs like Zuko and Zutaras hate Aang.

A lot of times when I see Zutara art work they depict Aang as jealous of Katara and Zuko. When I see Kataang art work it's the complete opposite. Zuko is portrayed in a good way and a good friend. It's just weird to me that they still have a lot of pinned up hurt on the inside from Katara and Aang being canon.
