Mall Game Project - Notes, Environments, and Activities
Howdy! Update's here a lot sooner then I expected. Made a lot of progress in terms of activities, the West Concourse of the mall, and enhancements to the note system.
Take Notes
First off, large enhancements have been made to the note system. Previously, all notes looked exactly like this:
Ignore the placeholder joke text. Regardless, this is how I designed it at first. Basic scrapbook paper just to hold some important notes. This worked when most of my writing intentions was little scrap pieces to tell a story, but then I wanted to expand and start writing what should be 'official' notes left/sent in by corporations or offices. And I highly doubt a head office is going to send out hand-scrawled notes on scrapbook paper. So, I've started working on a system to allow different types of notes. Here's the placeholder for an 'office' paper.
Very unfinished, missing a proper font, proper background, etc. But it's just to give an idea that there's different types of notes to collect.
Of course, with this change, I also had to update the note journal system, because it was built to support just the one type of note. Here's how it used to look:
And, here's how it looks now:
The journal now has a default "no item selected" background, and I've moved the "click a note to read" text to the other side of the screen. It also supports the different types of notes you can find, but it still needs some tweaks. Cool! Nifty!
Activities
The next big item on the checklist is the activities system! Currently It's not very exciting to show off, but you just have to trust me.
There's now a basic system where you can enter a store for the first time, and you'll be prompted with a message that there's a new activity to complete in the store. This can range from cleaning things up, stocking shelves, picking out a movie, searching for an item, repairing items, etc. These are all basic now but I plan on expanding that once I've gotten a few developed. Regardless, you walk in, interact with whatever the activity requires, and you'll get a reward and a sticker mark on your completion status!
This is... very rudimentary right now and mostly serves as something to test the gameplay loop with. I really want to come back to this system later on and add so much more to it. Hopefully next time I'll be able to show it off.
A big, starry sky
Last, but definitely not least, I've been working a lot on the environment for the mall. As a refresher, here's what it looked like the last time I showed it:
Well, here's what it looks like today:
It's still very far off completion, and the lighting needs some work. Lighting and art has never been my strong suit and I'm going to spend a lot of time tweaking this, but I'm pretty pleased with how it looks right now.
Wrap-up
That's it for now. A lot of progress in a week, and with all the visual enhancements it really feels like the project is starting to come together. I had basically finished about 80% of the gameplay last year before I stopped work, so the only thing stopping me has been this art segment. Now that some progress has been made it's motivated me a little bit more.
Thanks again for reading, hopefully I'll have some more later.
Mall Game update: huh wha
Whoops! It's been over a year or something since I last posted about this. A lot of work has gone on under the hood, but I also fell off the project for reasons I'll explain. But! I'm back at it for now.
So, what have I been doing now?
In terms of having a playable build, my current goal has been to create a single, playable activity inside the mall. This is, for now, going to be a very basic "pick up some items to progress a bar" type of goal that won't be very stimulating, but it's mostly just to test getting this system up and running. This is not finalized, and I'm working on having way more fun activities later on.
When the player enters a store area with an activity inside it, a new HUD marker will appear displaying the information.
in the near future, all activities in the mall will appear in this activity tracker!
Hey, why did you stop working on this?
Simply put, I hit a wall. The most common type of wall that I hit in projects like this: Art. I finished almost all major gameplay mechanics that I wanted for the project, and then it came time to actually *build* the game world. And I kinda suck at that, and like every other project I've ever worked on alone, I stopped once I felt like I couldn't do it.
In the past couple of days, I've been trying to rectify that. I'm picking up a lot more in 3D modelling and trying to build a basic grey-box environment of the mall. Like the concept images I posted last year, I do intend for the mall to have four "concourses', each with a themed selection of stores. For the current milestone, my plan is to work on a single wing at a time. Currently I'm working on what's referred to as the "West Concourse".
Hardly impressive, but it's a first step.
Gameplay Updates
Since last update, I've added a few things to the gameplay loop. Players can collect notes, like they've always been able to, but now they can read all of them from a brand new "Journal", which collects every note found in the game, and catalogues their discovery location.
I've also expanded the "Mall Guide" menu to include some more information about the mall itself. Like everything else I've shown, it's very much a WIP and lacks tons of detail.
Summer Spring Fall Winter Cleaning
Beyond this, I've also cleaned up a few bugs that have bothered me for a long time. I've finally fixed the issue that allowed you to open every HUD/menu at once (i.e. opening the pause menu while in the journal menu).
What's Next?
I think I've learnt my lesson and I'm not gonna promise when the next update will come. My life is about to get very busy for a lot of reasons I won't get into, so I'm not sure how long this new burst of activity in the project will last, but I'd really like to get something playable by the end of the year.
Aside from that, like I mentioned, my current goal is focusing on environments and gameplay loops. I want playable activities, and progress on the environment.
I guess that's it for now. Thanks for checking this out!
