I have a sticker on my computer that says, If I do a job in 30 minutes, It's because I spent 10 years learning how to do it. You owe me for the years not the minutes. I think about that a lot when I'm pricing art/commissions or paying for crafted products.

In a way, I wish we had a guild system for all artisans. It would sure help us with pricing and expectations of pricing if we could say, "Ah, that quilt is $300 because a junior quilter made it. And that one is $1000 because a journeyman quilter made it. And that one is $2500 because a master quilter made it."

I suppose the argument against a craftsman guild would be the cost of accreditation/testing/paperwork for something when you just want to be a hobbyist and not a production quilter.

People who price too low hurt the rest of us. I've seen hand-sewn handquilted queen size quilts listed on Etsy priced at less than $300 USD. I stopped selling on etsy for several reasons, but that pricing was one of them. $300 won't cover the materials for making a quilt that size! Then potential buyers approach me here and tell me to lower my prices, some going so far as to say they can find quilts at Walmart.

I'm a 4th generation quilter and helped my mom make quilts when I was growing up. I started making them in 2015, and now charge $25/hour (a liveable wage) plus cost of materials. The quilt I'm working on now? I'm at 50 hours work (ironing, cutting, sewing, pressing seams, arranging the blocks, basting the layers, handquilting, and soon will include binding, washing, and final pictures), have more yet ahead, and the supplies cost me $200 (thread, fabric, needles, batting, rotary blades). The final price will be around $1700 USD. People have told me to lower my price to something "reasonable," like $300 because they saw quilts of similar size priced that low on Etsy.

Y'all are paying for my years of experience, materials, and time. If you want lower prices, go to Walmart. Good luck finding a quilt that will last generations of use with proper care.
