Or here’s a totally not real but fun to think about plot twist: Montgomery faked his death to protect his family from Bracken. Here’s the twist: he actually had a second family. His other wife? Victoria Gates. Yep. His alter ego is the husband of our own Captain Sir, and he wanted her to take over as Captain of the 12th to watch over the three detectives and a writer that he cared for like his own children. In the gif we see him leaving after he stopped by to bring Gates some lunch. Beckett wasn’t supposed to be back yet so he had to slip out while she was interrogation.

These two are perfect together as partners and as lovers because they both need to know “the whole story”. They call each other out when they know the other isn’t okay, both of them have never been anyone’s first priority, but now that they have each other, they have made each other their first priorities and that is perfect because that is exactly where a lot of their issues stem from; losing people, they just exhibit the symptoms differently.
