i dream of you in
the pink summer light,
when i could visit you each morning,
as the fog rolled out to greet us
from your least favorite body of water
(that you waded in for me anyways)
i’ve thought about those ticklish whiskers,
wet from the fresh dew on the dandelions
that grew up so tall around us
(despite my best efforts)
you’ve told me hello in all your silent ways,
in your slow nods and gently flicking ears
and i have brushed the hair from behind them
to their rightful place
(despite your best efforts)
you glow so alarmingly in the sunrise,
as only you can,
as only you have,
and some days i have to squint
nowadays i would wear every pair of sunglasses to see you,
your glaring light
