A break from my ususal incorrect quotes, but I had some thoughts on how magic affinites work in the Black Clover universe and thought I’d share.
It’s pretty safe to say that magic afinities in Clover are a hereditary thing. I’d say that it’s also safe to assume that there are four base ways of inheriting magic, not counting stuff like devils or whatever it was Diamond did with Fana and Mars.
I’m going to use the Silva family as examples for most of these because we have a good idea of where all their different magics come from. They’re also the only family we have where we know the magic afinites for both parents with their mother having Steel and their father being strongly impled to have Water.
The first, and one of the two most common types, is Single Parent Inheritence.
This is where you have the exact same magic affinity as one of your parents. Noelle and Solid both fall into this catagory, having their father’s Water affinity. I’d also put the Fire Vermillions in this catagory.
The second of the two common types of magic inheritence is Single Parent Mutation.
This is where you have a magic affinity similar to one parent, but not the same. Nebra and her Mist magic falls into this catagory. We can also assume, based on the information avaliable, that Zora and his Ash magic also falls into this catagory.
The third type of magic inheritence I’d say is far rarer than the first two and is Dual Parent Mutation.
This is where you have a mix of both of your parents magic. I’d say Nozel and his Mercury magic falls into this catagory, though you could argue that it’s a Single Parent Mutation form Acier’s Steel magic Mercury is noteworthy as the only metal liquid at room temperature.
The fourth category for basic magic inheritence is Complete Mutation.
This is where you have a magical attribute completely different from anyone else in your family tree. We may or may not have already seen examples of this in the show, we don’t know enough about the parents of various characters to know.
Some of you are probably asking where Charmy and her Dual affinites fall in this theory. I’d say that Charmy has something unique to hybrids known as Dual Parent Inheritence.
This is where you have the exact same magic as both of your parents. May or may not be a thing all hybrids have.
Obviously, some affinites are more dominant than others, which is why half of House Vermillion all have fire magic and House Vaude all have spatial magic.
If I had to guess, I’d say the closer to one of the first four affinites (Earth, Wind, Fire, Water) your magic is, the more dominant is it, which would explain why all four Silva’s inherited the Water magic of their father in some way and only one got something related to Acier’s Steel magic as Water is one of the first four and Steel is derived from Earth.
