Pleonasm
Noun
[plee-uh-naz-uh m]
1. the use of more words than are necessary to express an idea; redundancy.
2. an instance of this, as free gift or true fact.
3. a redundant word or expression.
Origin: Pleonasm stems from the Late Latin noun pleonasmus, from the Greek pleonasmós “superabundance, excess,” in rhetoric “pleonasm,” from the Greek adjective pleíōn meaning “more.” It entered English in the early 1600s.
“PLEONASM, n. An army of words escorting a corporal of thought.” - Ambrose Bierce

Hey wonderful people!
Tonight is the opening night of Salems productions of Steel Magnolias! It’s a great play with some amazing Salem sisters as the lovable characters. I am so excited to support my Salem siblings that have been working so hard both onstage and behind the scenes. The cost is $7 for current Salem family members and $9 for everyone else. Maybe I’ll see some of you all there!

What kind of outfit do you recommend for an admissions interview? What can I expect?
Wear what you feel comfortable in! Rock your favorite outfit. usually more professional clothing but not too dressy. I recommend nicer pants, dresses, or skirts. Flats instead of heels, you will probably go on a tour and be doing some walking. Just remember confidence shows, so if you feel good about yourself it will shine!

Hi! I've been looking into transferring schools, and I was wondering what it's like to transfer to Salem? I currently go to a large, public university and despite some of the its great qualities, I haven't felt very academically challenged or connected to the community because of how large it is. When I came across Salem college it seemed perfect for me with its emphasis on academic excellence, diversity, and community connections. So what can I expect if I decide to transfer?
Hey there!
A lot of my Salem siblings are transfers and they love it here. One of the great things about Salem is the small class sizes. With that the professors can devote time to helping you and working with how you learn. They are really great at knowing what students need, including more challenging material. We also have great opportunities for independent studies and internships. Salem while being a college is definitely more of a community. There are so many opportunities to be involved and meet new people. Campus activities board puts on fun events and a lot of the academic organizations have daily activities as well. Salem is one big sisterhood. So if you do decide to transfer you can expect open arms and opportunities to grow and learn.
Let me know if that helped any and feel free to ask any more questions!

My home away from home.
Back from Summer!
Hey wonderful people!
It’s Sammi Salem back from summer! I hope you all had a fantastic summer, I know I did! I would love to hear all of your stories. Some of my current Salem siblings have already told me some of their amazing stories about internships, vacations, and jobs! I hope to share several of those with you. We also have several new faces around Salem, Who’s who to come! I am so excited to be back on our amazing campus and can’t wait to update all of you on what’s going on on campus!

Word of the Day: CANARD
Exam week is a stressful time for collage students across the country, but here at Salem finals are a tad bit sweeter. This is because we have self-scheduled exams! The exam period last around 6 days with sessions beginning in the morning and ending in the late afternoon. At whatever time you choose, you can pick up your exam and take it. This gives you the power to decide what exam to take first, when you want to take it, and how long you need to study! This makes exam week just a little less stressful because if you have a exam you are confident about you can take it the first day, and if you need more time to study for a more difficult exam you can wait until the last. So how can we do this? The Honor Code*! Our amazing honor code and the community of honor it creates allows us this special privilege. Salem is truly a unique and amazing place!
The Honor Code*
Salem College is a community of honor. I will show respect for my community by behaving with honesty, integrity and civility.
As a responsibility to my honor community:
I will show respect for my classmates and faculty by maintaining honesty in my academic work and refraining from cheating.
I will show respect for my community and peers by maintaining integrity and honesty in my daily life and refraining from stealing and lying.
I will show respect for faculty, staff, my peers, classmates and members of the administration by maintaining civility and refraining from disruptive and abusive language and behavior.
I acknowledge that I will be held accountable for my decisions and behavior, and I will accept the consequences of my actions. In choosing Salem College, I pledge to uphold the principles of the Honor Code and will cherish and guard its traditions.

I’ve decided that since we are all going through that end of the year exam time I would start re-blogging cute animal pictures! I hope this makes you all smile!

This is so important.
As we steadily approach the middle of the semester, know that it is okay to ask for help. Reach out!
The end of the semester is near and this is very important advice!
Receiving your letter of acceptance, visiting campus, shopping for your new bed spread and cool posters to hang on the wall, move-in day, first day of classes, first big paper and test, making new friends, meeting a Big, missing home. First year can be a crazy whirlwind as you make your transition into a new campus. It can be so much fun, but it can also be stressful. After 18 years, we are leaving home on our own to start in a new place with new faces. Whether it’s a 15 minute drive or a 6 hour drive to home, homesickness is one of the many realities of going to college. It is also your first semester of doing some hard work. Studying into the wee hours of the morning for the big test, staying up all night to get your paper finished in time, or simply doing homework on time. Perhaps you are used to the workload from high school, or perhaps you are struggling with getting in the right groove. All semester though you have been working hard, and the stress sometimes doesn’t get any better. It always seems like as you finish one thing, there is just another thing waiting in the background to take it’s place. Then the dreaded finals approach. Everyone is running around, pulling late nights, just fighting to get ahead. It can be very stressful and overwhelming, but that doesn’t mean you have to deal with it by yourself though. Salem College has many proactive and preventive measures to help students adjust to campus. The Health Services center has nurses and doctors that you can see about any problems you may be experiencing. If you ever want to talk to someone, try the counseling services or even the listening post where you can go and talk to another student or intern of the counselors. The wellness classes, which are a required course here at Salem, have opportunities for students to participate in helping others around campus deal with stress. First years Fazia Iqubal, Nicole Zier, Hannah Kelsey, Zoey Dempsey, and Sophomore Mallory Needham conducted a wellness project that encompassed a de-stressing event where students could come and frolic in bubbles produced by the bubble machine, blow their own tiny bubbles or go big with the mega sticks. Events like these help Salem relax and ground again during a stressful time. Salem doesn’t only care about students physical well being, but puts an emphasis on their mental and emotional states as well.

If Dory says it, we must do it. Hang in there!
Our writing center on campus is an awesome resource for students who need help writing papers. It is especially fantastic for those final papers that are due soon! It is always ok to ask for help!
