Self-Directed Practice #2: Final
“Florida City”
Wooden picture frame, photography
With the photo frame piece I wanted to display the memories of the Florida City I remember when I was younger. Within the frame it’s this idealistic view of what Florida City is like but around you can see the changes that are happening. Within the frame you see this “perfect” view of the location but if you make a wrong turn somewhere you will see the “real” Florida City, not the one advertised to be.
“Battle Scars”
Ceramic Plates, Duct tape
With the plates piece I wanted to create a visual representation of the changes that occur and the damages that sometimes occur in ones lifetime. But when injuries are inflicted one has to heal and what is left behind are scars. So with these shattered plates being mended you see the cracks that are left behind. Putting them on display as battle scars.
Self-Directed Practice #2 Idea 3/3
For the third idea I was thinking along the lines of using photo frames and putting them outside and “Capture” a moment in time that occurs within the frame. Kind of a visual representation of how our minds capture moments.
Self-Directed Practice #2 Idea 2/3
For my second idea I was thinking along the lines of broken pottery and the trying to put the pieces back together or a broken plate and trying to fix it so it can be used again. Try to fix it with other materials like clay or dirt. Cracks show the damage that occurred and its kind of like scars.
Self-Directed Practice #2 Idea 1/3
For my first idea I was thinking of creating a sort of jewelry box for my mother’s jewelry as she doesn't have a place to put her accessories. As this container will now contain all these accessories that once belonged to past family members and present gifts.
Self-Directed Practice
Totem Poles
With this piece I wanted to create totem poles with items those in my house hold find to be their favorite. The first totem pole are from my mothers garden as she loves to tend to her plants so this was the perfect focal point to represent my mother. The second totem pole is made of the shoe boxes from my mother, brother, niece, and myself as we all have an interest in footwear.
Self-Directed Practice #1 Idea 3/3
For my third idea, I was thinking along the lines of how dogs experience the world in comparison to how we experience the world. Starting with vision we are different in how we see the world.
Self-Directed Practice #1 Idea 2/3
For my second idea, I based it along the lines of the history of animals in general and how these totem poles each animal does have a meaning as to why they were incorporated into the pole. i was thinking of maybe creating one of my own with the animals best related to my life.
Self-Directed Practice #1 Idea 1/3
For my first idea, I was thinking along the lines of how military dog tags are very similar to actual dog tags and how they are used to identify those who wear it. Whether it be human or dog.

To Remove the Work is to Destroy it: Site-based Sculpture
Glass, acrylic paint, glue
For this piece I wanted to create this barrier between private property and the public sidewalk. With the use of glass from frames found in my home I created this stained glass because I wanted to create this sense of sacredness, like that found in a church. Ones home is classified as private space but the moment you reach the sidewalk, this now becomes public space.
To Remove the Work is to Destroy it: Site-based Sculpture Idea 3/3
For my third idea I was thinking of the concept of pools and how some are private and some are public. I was thinking of bringing the “private” pool to the lake at the park to create not just a funny sight but like Richard Serra did with his piece Tilted Arc “Soliciting, even commanding attention, the sculpture asks the office workers and other pedestrians to leave their usual hurried course and follow a different route”
To Remove the Work is to Destroy it: Site-based Sculpture Idea 2/3
For my second idea I was thinking of creating the look of stained glass refraction onto a sidewalk which is out in the open. Sidewalks are considered a public space as once you pass the sidewalk that is considered “county area”. Churches are a place one looks for refuge and privacy when one is in need and stained glass windows are commonly found in these settings.
To Remove the Work is to Destroy it: Site-based Sculpture Idea 1/3
For my first idea I was thinking of setting up these type of public signage inside my home like a way to bring the public setting into a private setting. As many homes they are only accessible to those who live there and they know which door leads to where. But if a first time visitor is to come they would need help navigating this new “public” area and what is no accessible to the public.
