FLAT SOBEK FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!

Had this idea in my head about everyone’s favorite crocodile god as one of my favorite twitter memes, including the saying in hieroglyphs!

Process:

I used the Thesaurus Linguae Aegypticae for this.

“Flat” I kept as “flat” “qrh”

“Fuck” I went to “fucker” which then became “copulator” in the lexicon. Originally it did include a phallus so I made it more abstract for generic audiences. “nk.w”

“Friday” I struggled with as I could not find a lot of information on time names in Ancient Egypt so I went for the generic “day.” “hrw”

Yes, you can get this on redbubble and yes, I will be posting this on like every Friday to my stories for the rest of time!

I've never talked about them here before but I have a truly cool collection of vintage reptile-themed brooches. I absolutely lost it over this piece when I was out with my sister in law at a church Christmas bazaar of all things.

If you've never heard of María Félix or aren't into vintage haute couture, this probably doesn't mean much to you. But it's a brooch replica of an extremely famous Cartier emerald necklace. María Félix was a Mexican actress who is better-associated with snake imagery, but she loved reptiles of all kinds. In 1975, she walked into Cartier with a baby crocodile and says she wants a piece inspired by it- and hurry up, because her pet was going to grow. She also had a huge emerald she needed cut down, and in response, Cartier made this:

The Cartier piece went back to them after her death and has been on display at several museums since, most recently Museo Jumex as part of a Cartier retrospective. Félix worked extensively with the brand in the 60s and 70s and brought huge creative energy with her unique tastes.

Cartier made a suite for public sale in 2018 inspired by the necklace, but this brooch isn't part of that. I'm not sure where it came from (my guess? Mass produced as a museum exhibition souvenir), I need to do some digging, but it's an incredible find.

False Gharial aka Malayan Gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii), family Gavialidae, found in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia

Historically, there has been some disagreement about how this species should be placed. At one time, some herpetologists believed this species should be placed in the crocodile family, Crocodylidae. There is vast agreement now that they should be placed in the Gharial family, Gavialidae.
