Congratulations if you’re like me and your end of year mantra is “NEW YEAR, NEW ME.” Even if the new year doesn’t exactly end up being a new you; at least you tried! At least you’ve recognized that you may (or, in a few rare cases, may not) need to change your outlook on a few things.
So here’s a few of my “NEW YEAR. NEW ME.” bullshit ideas I’ve brainstormed up over the past few days:
2016!
1. Minimalize.
I’ve been doing a great deal of this over all of 2015. Since Ian and I moved into a studio apartment, our choices were to either take a minimalistic approach to living or end up looking like hoarders. It’s actually quite nice, though. We have fewer things which results in less things being lost, I’ve cut down on a huge portion of my closet which means I pretty much wear everything in my closet, & when we do decide to move, uh hello, talk about easy packing.
2. Disconnect / Be Present
I, like most people, spend the majority of my day going from Facebook to Instagram to emails to Pinterest to Tumblr and repeat until I go to sleep. Literally until I pass out. (Thanks, Ian, for plugging my phone in and for setting my glasses aside so I do not break them!) Sometimes I’ll even forget parts of my day because one part of me will be doing something and then another part of me will either be doing something on my phone or thinking about something I did on the internet/want to look up on the internet.
Social media has even played a part in ruining my day at times. (Receiving texts from family about something you post on the internet is always somewhat annoying. Yes, I do post stupid things and am aware of that..just usually not right away. And I’m okay with that because I am a human with real human emotions who isn’t afraid to offend a few people every now and then! Shock!!)
Not saying that I am going to go MIA from social media throughout all of 2016 because 2016 is going to be another hell of a year for me. I am getting married. As well as a whole ton of other amazing things without a doubt, so you can count on me humble-bragging the absolute crap out of things when the time is right. :)
What I AM saying is that the internet has always been my way of sharing my opinion without me having to talk in real life. (I was, and still am, a very shy person.) It’s just that I am an adult now and I am coming to realize that sharing my two cents aloud isn’t always as scary as it seems. I’m learning that sometimes people appreciate the things I have to say and when they don’t, that’s okay too! I get it!
So in 2016, I am going to work on listening. I’ll work on setting time aside for social media when it’s most appropriate. Because giving up technology completely.....no.
I could go on for probably 2 more hours with each thing that I’d to either do or change, but to save some time; here’s the other things I’ve written down! (Plus, I have dinner to eat.)
3. Working on Selfishness. (Yikes. Sorry everyone!)
4. Meditate more (as well as more yoga. These two things have made me a much more pleasant person to be around in the past.)
5. Make own Beauty & Body Products. (Sensitive skin calls for knowing what exactly I am putting on my body without breaking out within 10 minutes of putting unsaid product on. Plus making your own stuff is exciting)
6. More Meal Planning (as well as cooking at home more, even when I feel too lazy to cook.)
7. Kind of contradicts the last one, but more planned date nights. Instead of just randomly going out, making it more of a special occasion. (Because it is! No cooking or mess to clean up?? Special occasion right there.)
If you’ve gotten this far, are there any things on your list of 2016 goals that you’d like to make happen? Or perhaps something you’ve been working on and are determined to make possible within the next year? Please share!
