On Friday, April 5th, I attended the open house event for new students in Arts Scholars. I helped answer their questions and contributed useful information from my experiences as an Arts Scholars student. I even had the opportunity to share elements of my capstone project and Arts Fest exhibition. The event was fun and relaxed, and it gives me lots of hope for the incoming class of Arts Scholars.
On Friday March 29, I performed with Sketchup in a half-hour sketch comedy show at the Philly Improv Theater. We performed a total of eight sketches, all written by group members in previous years. Personally, I acted in three of those sketches. This required two weeks of rehearsal and memorization, but the final result was a fun show that the audience clearly enjoyed.
On Monday, March 4th, I visited “Visualizing Narratives: Shaping Resistance” at the Stamp Gallery. The exhibition of works from many artist focused on interpreting the history of global activism for modern audiences. Among the many delicately crafted works, I was most intrigued by a series of elaborate newspapers that were dated December 7, 2037 in order to see our current era in hindsight.
On Friday, February 8th, I attended a showing of Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” at the Hoff Theater. The movie showcased an eclectic mix of genres between its countless references to other Disney-owned films, shows, and franchises. I was impressed by the positive effects of combining ideas in this way; the movie’s humor and value increased as a result of its unpredictable creativity.
On Sunday, December 2nd, I performed in Sketchup’s semesterly sketch comedy show, “Facedown Sketchup” at the Hoff Theater. After months of writing and preparation, our team of 14 writers, performers, and stage managers showcased 22 sketches—16 on stage, and six as pre-recorded films. This experience was the highlight of my semester, and I am proud to say that all our hard work finally paid off with a fantastic show.
On Thursday, November 15th, I attended the Coffee and Crafts: Gimp workshop. I learned how to create the square weave with gimp string, which I had never used before. I also learned how calming it can be to work on such a simple task while not focusing on anything more stressful, complicated, or urgent.
On Wednesday, October 17th, I performed stand-up at Milkboy Arthouse’s Comedy Open Mic Night. This was my first time performing stand-up, so it was somewhat scary, but mostly I had a great time, and my jokes seemed to land well with the audience. I decided that I could perform best if I used my mic time to tell funny stories, which is exactly what I did.
On Tuesday, October 2nd, I attended an advance screening of First Man, starring Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy. In contrast to many historical movies about the Gemini and Apollo programs, this film focused closely on astronaut Neil Armstrong himself. The film’s use of symbolism in storytelling expertly demonstrates how pathos can be applied to bring audiences closer to characters on screen.
On Friday, September 7, I attended David Harbour’s Back to School Lecture at Stamp. In an hour of both planned and audience-submitted questions, the Stranger Things star discussed subjects ranging from the future of his popular show to lessons learned from his own college experience. I had the luck of winning a meet-and-greet pass for after the lecture, and there Mr. Harbour gave me a bit of advice on mystery fiction writing: “Be diligent. Write every day, or at least sit in front of the blank paper every day.”
On Friday, April 13th, I attended the Gymkana team’s 2018 Home Show. I learned that the team forbids all consumption of alcohol, cigarettes, or other illegal drugs. As a result, they are able to focus and develop more advanced skills through healthy living. The twenty-four acts showcased an amazing range of acrobatic talents, all far beyond my expectations.
On Thursday, April 12th, I attended a screening of “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” at Stamp’s Hoff Theater. The movie was tremendously funny, especially thanks to the roles of Jack Black and Kevin Hart. From a writing perspective, this movie closely followed Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey. The movie’s extended timeline also raised the stakes for the central conflict, thereby maintaining tension and energy throughout the film.
On Wednesday, March 28, I attended a showing of “The Disaster Artist,” a film that tells the story of two fresh actors facing very different challenges within the Hollywood scene as they try to create a movie together. Their film, “The Room,” is now a legendary cult classic, widely recognized as the best bad movie ever. “The Disaster Artist” demonstrates that the path to artistic success is neither linear nor predictable. In the case of Tommy Wiseau’s project, the mission to create a blockbuster drama succeeded instead in creating a cult comedy. I think we can all learn from that.
On Monday, February 26th, I attended the Milk x Honey open mic night hosted by Terpoets at Milkboy Arthouse. I watched many acts ranging from original music to spoken word poetry. I never expected that I would enjoy hearing rhythmic poetry read aloud like that. There were also many talented musicians! Among other things, I learned that the word “Apricity” means the warmth of the sun.
On Monday, February 5, I attended a presentation on telescope imaging at the UMD Observatory. There, I learned about how new technology in astronomy allows the creation of graphics and images that are not only visually stunning, but also relevant to current studies of the universe. I learned how digital photographs of the same subjects taken over time can be used to show changes that would otherwise go unnoticed.
On Friday, December 8th, I attended the ARHU Research and Arts Celebration. I was the first presenter scheduled; I read one of my short stories and led a discussion about it afterwards. Many others presented too, with presentations ranging from research papers to dance performances. I also enjoyed the exhibition of visual art on display, and I hope to return to this event next time as well. It was very fun and empowering to see so many performers, writers, and artists gathering to promote and display their work.
On November 29, I attended the Coffee and Crafts event in the Bel Air lounge. We worked to carve potatoes into stamps and use them to paint holiday wrapping paper. I never knew that potatoes could be used in this way, but it actually worked very well. I hope to attend more future Coffee and Crafts events, and perhaps utilize my new potato-carving skills in the future.

On August 24, I saw the screening of Moana at the Stamp’s Hoff Theater. Given that I had already seen the movie five other times, none of it really surprised me. I still enjoyed all of the music though, and I now believe that the sad Maui face seen above could be an excellent meme.
