the north of ireland has the second highest rate of femicide in all of europe. it was dubbed one of the most unsafe places to be a woman in western europe. 30 women and girls in the north have been victims of femicide since november 2020. none of the people who set belfast on fire last night have ever gotten violent about that or made threats against the perpetrators. they don't care that the family of the victim of the attack this week (stephen ogilvy) have begged for there to be calm and no riots. they don't care that the brother of natasha mcnally called them out as toxic. they're just taking any opportunity they can to be brazenly racist out in the open. they aren't acting out of ignorance, a lack of education, or empathy for victims; they're simply racist. they are adults making a choice to intimidate, destroy, and target marginalised people. they are endangering black and brown families, setting their homes on fire, and destroying buses and public facilities to terrorise communities. black and brown families with young children are seeking refuge in their white neighbours' houses because they're so terrified. what's happening in belfast is a pogrom by the same people who burn effigies of irish people every july. they don't give a shit about victims, they only want an excuse to surveil and threaten black and brown people, who had nothing to do with the horrific incident, and tar them all with the same brush and claim that they're the dangerous ones. call it what it is: RACISM.

One thing I’ve heard far too often when the topic of conflicts between Japan and other Asian countries comes up — especially around Japan’s war crime — is a comment that goes like this.

After hearing about the war crimes Japan has never apologised for, and still actively denies, and how it shaped current Asia Pacific conflicts, someone will inevitably say: “Well, it was a long time ago. The younger generation shouldn’t be blamed. People should forgive and move on.”

It’s a perspective that comes easily to those who aren’t carrying the generational trauma, whose families weren’t erased from records, and whose communities aren’t still fighting for acknowledgment. It asks the people harmed to “move on” while asking nothing of the institutions responsible for the violence, the denial, or the silence that followed. For some, massacres, forced disappearances, and human experiments exist only as distant facts in a documentary — not as wounds that still live in families and communities.

Forgiveness doesn’t replace acknowledgment, accountability, or a sincere apology. It comes after those things, never before, and certainly not instead of them.

I caught my dog getting into a rabbit nest once and I was horrified. I immediately took the surviving babies to the wildlife clinic, I wasn’t like oh wow great job eating those baby rabbits Holly. And cottontails aren’t even a protected species like native birds are.

If you shot a heron you’d go to jail but letting your shithead cat kill one is perfectly acceptable and “part of nature”. The way these people fetishize their animals’ killing abilities is so fucking bizarre.

The place where our dacha is, used to be full of birds. Now, one of the people who live full time at the village have a family of cats, and they don't believe in neutering cats. There are so many feral cats now.

And so little birds. I fucking hate it.

The old lady that used to live next to me would get cats and let them roam the neighborhood un-neutered. Naturally they died a lot, and when they died in the winter (often from freezing to death) she would keep their bodies in her freezer until the ground thawed out enough to bury them. Freezer full of dead cats. Backyard full of dead cats. And she would just get more.

She essentially created a feral cat colony in our neighborhood. I had to take my bird feeders down for a while because they became death traps. My cardinal (bird) buddy lost his sweet mate to a cat. It was heartbreaking.

A couple years ago a great horned owl pair moved into the neighborhood and I noticed a distinct drop in the feral cat population around that same time lol
