on rare occasions, i don't give characters disorders because it makes sense for them to have it. i give them disorders in order to explore what would happen if they did have it. does that make sense

1 - people don't do enough with lotf in general because they are too biased towards their characterization of the character and they are unwilling to see any other interpretations of the characters. i like seeing everyone's point of view on the boys personally, but i've seen people blatantly hate on different perspectives just because it doesn't align with how they see the characters. in my original comment, i mentioned post island alcoholic ralph as an example of people refusing to see a different perspective on a character. in a tiktok comment section i saw a person say something such as "ralph wouldn't be an alcoholic" and i could only think "ok did he tell you that personally or something". severe trauma quite literally rewires the brain and can cause insane shifts in behaviors and personality. yes, alcoholic ralph has become quite a common interpretation of post island ralph and it may get annoying, but let's not act like the interpretation exists for no reason. anyways back to my actual point, fandom gets boring when only a few mundane interpretations are seen as acceptable. we should explore. imagine. there's so much potential that has been lost just because people pander to one simplistic version of these characters. go beyond the bounds. add complexity. note: im probably biased here; i do like alcoholic ralph because i think the concept has potential for psychological horror and angst. however my point still stands because there are other examples of this other than alcoholic ralph. 2 - some people genuinely just don't have the intellect and nuance required to engage with lotf im sorry. im tired of seeing bad takes. this probably doesn't need elaboration but imma talk anyways. lotf is a classic literature book that has gone through extensive analysis and countless interpretations. it has many themes. it IS a complex book that requires thinking. you are going to need intellect to interpret and absorb this book. some takes just dilute the meaning and the themes of the book, ignore the subtext and context, and disservice the book in general. (ive seen so many bad takes it's actually irritating me at this point im getting pissed) 3 - again on lost potential, i feel like people on here are trying too hard to be palatable. we're missing out on interesting character dynamics and development because people don't want to dive into the toxic aspects of the characters that WOULD exist.

i don't think i need to elaborate much here. the exploration of dark flaws isn't inherently bad. infact, i think they're what makes a character interesting + flaws add depth.
