Research for SBI I used the canon EOS system book to help me use my own canon film SLR effectively while shooting my Portrait photographs
Research for SBI Here is another book I'm used for research about film and analog photography but it was basic in knowledge unlike reframing photography
Research used for SBI here is Reframing photography theory and practices which I used for film types and development research which I used to boost my knowledge of darkroom based photography practices
Photographing ourselves research though books This is the book in which I gained my initial ideas for my documentary photographs. This book is about soviet propaganda which shows the "ideal life " in Cold War soviet Russia . I wanted to create a set of photographs showing the ideal life in bristol by showing the public engaging in a public event or Somthing within the city
Visual language evaluation
For the visual language module we had to create our own photo books based on the "attachment" theme. I explored the opposite of attachment into my own personal idea of solitude where if own had no-one to be with what would a day in their life look like . this was based on my own experience of moving from a life of where I've had my family and friends around me to a new Chapter of life living alone. I took some ideas from Nick Hedges photographs following his homelessness in the 60's and 70's into consideration after seeing his exhibition in a gallery when we went on a trip to London and also Robert Franks later work after the death of his daughter. these gave me some ideas of what to photograph for my photo book and also a better idea of what text I can use too.
My photo book named Solitude , consisted of a white cover which was laminated to protect the finish and inside was a book of 6 photographs and captions which effectively told a story about a day in one's life. I planned and created the book myself which was a great but not impossible challenge. unfortunately after creating the book I noticed the glue I used effected the paper and caused it to give the book an unprofessional feel to it which I was unhappy about.
making the book and how it all came together was a new and different experience to what I've done before , binding and book and creating a folding cover from a single piece of card provided a good challenge to make and shooting and selecting the right photos to use. I planned how the photos should look while shooting and I didn't need to edit them so I could keep the sense of realism in my book.
All my photographs were taken from the "Persons" point of view so I made sure the eye line was level to the viewer of the photograph so it felt like they was the "person" in question, I shot in RAW so I could later adjust the exposure if needs be.
the essay was also a new experience for me where when I did Photography at GCSE and A-level I never had to do an essay for photography before. I found using books and galleries rather than internet sources better for research as I could have something physical to work from . I also wrote about Nick Hedges and Robert Franks work in more depth which then helped me in my book making ideas and to what I wanted to photograph. it was also a good exercise to learn to read other peoples photographs and critic them and express myself in my own writing.
the overview of the essay and photo book helped me develop skills such as thinking critically into how other people would see my work and how they would be effected by my use of photographs and words. this module helped me develop skills such as book making and essay writing which I've never needed to do before but now confident in doing now .
Silver based imaging Evaluation
Silver based imaging was for me both the hardest and also the funniest module of this course. I've never done film based photography or even stepped foot in a darkroom . I learned so much about darkroom practices such as developing film into usable negatives , doing test prints and contact sheets and using enlargers to create final images. I also enjoyed learning about the chemical processes in the darkroom too . I feel that learning this side of photography has boosted my knowledge greatly and helped me to benefit a richer photography experience than before.
we started our film photography though a walk on the start of the course and i found myself shooting portraits primarily but due to a broken camera which i didn't discover until many weeks into the course, the rolls of film where coming out blank so I didn't have any negatives to see or use. I found myself drawn to portrait photography and so I picked "Face" for my theme. I looked and researched into David Baileys work which I enjoyed the simplicity of his work and use of studio lighting . this inspired me to do studio shoots for my theme , I used my own Mamiya 645 camera as i liked medium format photography. but due to my lack of knowledge of developing the medium format film and time restrictions i abandoned the original idea and then did location shoots with a Canon 35mm camera which worked.
I understood how to use a enlarger and grading and was able to produce the prints i needed for my final photographs. I was able to show examples of dodging and burning and also retouching but I couldn't do it properly which effected the way I chose my final images. the scanning exercise was easy to perform and helped me understand how image resolution and file formats effect the final scanned image.
another task was large format photography and it developed the concept of the larger the negative the better the quality the final photography will be, this task also introduced me to contact printing from a positive image. we also did photogram's which i found interesting and fun to do.
another task was the advantages and disadvantages of Film and digital photography which showed me how even know film is outdated it still has advantages over digital and how to can help to better yourself as a photographer by slowing down the shooting processes to enable a photographer to get the shot when only shooting 24 or 36 frames per film.
this module has helped me be able to focus and critic what photographs to use from a very limited range and has helped me understand the inner workings of the camera and also stopped me from just wasting shots when film costs money . due to the nature of photographic paper and how it can be so easily damaged by dirt and marks I've chosen to frame my final photographs which has helped me to think more professionally in how I display my final images and also other works too . i felt that keeping a workbook / log of my development was a good way to show improvement and also to see how far I've come from the start of the course to now.
Photographing ourselves evaluation
the photographing ourselves module covered a wide range of physical and digital skills which was designed to introduce us to new skills which would boost our confidence when shooting on location , image sequencing and editing , and the use of models and candid public in order to pass this course and use these skills in future. I found the learning and the use of these new skills very helpful to put towards my own photographic skills.
the first was task given to us before we started the course which involved taking a self portrait without any physical likeness of ourselves. these task challenged me because of the way I understood the task , rather than using image editing software I wanted to create something though my camera there and then not on a computer. I think that this was a skill which is effective when editing software or time is not available to a photographer.
the next part of the module was to produce a series of 10 images and then pick 3 final images which must have a clear documentary theme. After reading a book on Russian Propaganda and they was the propaganda was used to show a "ideal lifestyle" I decided to choose the "place" theme in which I Chose to try and promote Bristol at night around the Christmas period as the same way as in the book. at the beginning I had a load of ideas and they eventually came to the final idea. the hard part was choosing the 10 and then the 3 final photographs for this part of the module as I was trying to make the photos interesting though the use of lighting to make them " better than average " documentary photographs of Bristol. I was constantly drawn back to the Propaganda book for inspiration and ideas.
the next part was location portraiture was particularly difficult as the day I picked was raining so I had to think about the lighting and camera settings as the weather was constantly changing and also the model itself who I was going to photograph as everyone wouldn't be out on the streets. This part of the module helped me step out of my comfort zone when photographing strangers on the street as I used a small prime lens rather than a telephoto lens. Also I developed my skills further by trying to compose the shot so if didn't have to edit it in post-production and keep it true to the original photograph itself.
the next part of the module interested me greatly , Monochrome portraiture. I myself have never done film photography before starting the course and I was excited and fascinated about the whole aspect of this photography. I learned how to set a studio environment up properly and professionally and how to use a Mamiya medium format camera, there was also a bit of team building exercise as we worked in groups to take the photographs. I also developed the film and also produced the final 8x10" image though and enlarger developed my use of Darkroom based skills though this exercise. documents such as the risk assessment forms helped me to think for professionally to avoid accidents and damage to equipment.
Digital backup was easy and straight forward once I read up on a tutorial on the internet , it helped me understand different file types and how useful it is to use the right file formats when printing or exporting the image to the web and how an images quality is affected too. my previous knowledge of Photoshop CS6 helped me to effectively perform this part of the module.
this module has both inspired me and helped me to think about my photography differently though the photographing of people. both the location and the documentary shoot has helped me better understand what myself and my camera are capable of when working in a fast moving environment. my knowledge of photography has increased my reading the books on the set reading list and also books which I have discovered and read myself. I feel that I have gained a huge wealth of knowledge from this module which has helped me become more professional in my work and also helped me to both think critically and also out the box with my own photography. the digital side of the module has helped me think deeper into backing up work and how to effectively save time and still produce professional quality results.
Final three photographs- PO these are my final three photographs for documentary photography.
Editing of my final 3 Photos for documentary - PO
Photos 1 and 2 show me opening my RAW files into CameraRaw to both properly expose the photographs and to also convert them into a Photoshop file in which i can begin editing them. photos 3,4 and 5 show me dodging the whites and reds on the woman's hat to make it stand out a bit from the background, i tried not to edit it too much as i wanted to keep the photos true to the subject. Photo 6 shows me using a filter called smart sharpen which helps to sharpen up the photograph before saving it as a JPEG , i used smart sharpen on all of my photographs. Photos 7 and 8 show me removing a spot of light which was leaking out the casing of a spot light , originally i used the spot removal tool in CS6 but found that it didn't work so i used the clone tool and copied the black lower down and used that to cover the light leak and then blended it all in . All photos where then saved to JPEG and to the highest quality ready for printing
Documentary sequencing and spect ion of final photographs -PO The first photos shows the initial 10 photos which i was picking from. The second photo shows a idea which I have to Link the bristol at night and Christmas. The third photo shows my final 3 photos which I've picked , these is the idea about bristol at night , Christmas and also I loved the lighting in the photo so this gave three solid links to the set of the photo. I chose to print on regular printer paper to save on ink and paper as these is just a rough set of photos
Notes on Ilford SFX film -SBI
Chemical research into darkroom processing -SBI Here I've wrote about the chemicals and the solution ratios to mix them properly and effectively
Final 10 Photos for Documentary - PO here are my 10 final photos which i shall pick my final three from. I've stuck to my Bristol at night idea but expanded on it to involve Christmas So my Documentary idea is basically Christmas In Bristol City
Final photobook finished -VL Here is a few photos to show the finished photobook
Photobook sequencing and text -VL This is the original order for my photos in my photo book. I was going for a “day in the life ” sort of style for these images Whilst putting my photos into the photobook I didn’t like the tea for one photo and decided not to use it . Instead of having the captions for the photos together , I chose to have them all on the opposite page to the photograph on the blank page to better fit the solitude theme
Deigning the Text for the photobook - VL
For this is picked the same font and size used for the books title, i placed a box around the text so when i print and cut them out i will have the same spacing around them to keep the form the same in the book.
Visual and critical research -VL for my visual research I used the reframing photography book which was on the set reading list and I found a whole lot of information about photobooks and how to make them including stitching and also folding ideas which I found very helpful For my images I chose Robert franks: the Americans and also a Photofile book about his later work which have me some good ideas for my photobook.
