“Well, I certainly appreciate the help.” He smiled.
Samuel nodded a little. “It’s not a problem.”
“Of course not.” Noah shook his head when the other asked whether he minded. He half smiled, “I’m Noah. And you are?”
“Samuel. It’s a pleasure to meet you, I’m sure,” he responded, returning the other’s smile as he spoke.
Noah nodded, “Thanks, man.” He smiled, “Appreciate that.” He began to walk in the direction that the other had pointed him, walking slowly.
Samuel smiled and gave a smiled nod. “It’s no problem at all,” he replied before starting to head towards the clothing store. “So what’s your name? If you don’t mind me asking, that is.”
He nodded, “Very true.” Noah answered the man with a solemn nod, before adding, “Thanks, man. Mind pointing me in that direction. I might keep this, just in case.” He pointed at the putrid clothing still on his chest, “But I’d rather not wear it now.”
“Of course. I can walk you there if you’d like? I don’t have anywhere I need to be,” he replied with a smile. “That’s pretty understandable.”
“More than on the irritating side, I get that we’re in an apocalypse and that survival is crucial but there was no need to be such aggressive when they could’ve just asked for something.” She muttered, Isabella was a sarcastic person but never aggressive unless she really needed to.
“They’re just kids. They’re still learning I suppose,” he replied before quickly adding, “Not that that condones their actions.”
“Oh, it’s not.” Noah couldn’t help but half smile as he talked about, not knowing how else to handle the awful situation than with humour.
“Better than the alternative though, right?” He smiled a little. “If you need a clean shirt, I’m pretty sure I saw a clothing store about a block back that seemed to still have a lot of usable stuff in it.”
As soon as Noah got to his feet, he turned his attention to the other man, nodding his head immediately. He knew the question was typically one of self-preservation as much as one of concern – it only made sense, no one wanted to risk someone turning – but that didn’t really bother him. Everyone was just trying to survive now. “I’m fine.” He nodded, his voice calm. “I mean– sort of disgusting, but fine. Thanks.”
Samuel gave a short nod in response. “If you’re sure,” he replied, a slight smile crossing his lips for a moment. “Yeah... that doesn’t look particularly pleasant.”
Noah winced as the blood drenched him, once again finding himself disgusted that this was the world now, that to survive, you were occasionally going to bloody. Literally. As soon as the thing was dead – really dead, this time – Noah pulled himself to his feet, looking down at his clothes in disgust. “Fantastic. Really fantastic.”
Samuel noticed the other male pinned to the ground by a walker. He started making his way over to help but by the time he reached him, the situation had already been taken care of- albeit in a messy way. “Are you okay?” He asked, concerned as to whether the other might have obtained any injuries during his struggle.
leo takes a moment, and after he’s thought it all through, he nods. ‘ yeah. the world is … a mess. ’ he wishes it weren’t, he really does. no one deserves this sort of life. ‘ oh, uh, yeah —— why are you so attractive? ’ leo really doesn’t want to ask what he had originally come for, and so he figures this is the best route to take. it’s not like he doesn’t mean it either.
“Yeah, I guess that’s one way to put it,” he replied with a short sigh. When the other spoke again, Samuel raised his eyebrows at him and paused for a brief moment. “I uh- I... don’t know?” He replied, not exactly sure how he was supposed to respond to that.
a big, BURLY man, wrinkles in the fabric of his suit setting in from a day of wearing it; his father, reassuring this man was the best money could buy; his mother, HYSTERICAL … not a part of him deserved that, and they knew it. it’s in the way he feels physically ill, the way his stomach churns and the headache forming, and it’s the vivid reminder of words spoken tell the truth, tell it how it happened, you did nothing wrong. he’s sick. not physically, not yet, but at the rate it’s coming on — leo is quick to locate a chair, to pull it out and seat himself in it. CONFLICT, he deals with it well, he’s dealt with it plenty. the smile that finds it’s way back to his face is only half upturned, and out of respect, he keeps his eyes level with the man’s. ‘ yeah, ’ to his own surprise, his voice comes out strong, almost normal. ‘ but i get it. they have their reasons, and some of them are damn good. ’ there was a time he stuck to himself too, a time he was alone, but his reasons were purely selfish ( everyone’s are, aren’t they ? )
Samuel nodded. “That they are. It’s just a shame that most people have been in situations that force them to think like that now, don’t you think?” He asked, pausing only briefly before he spoke again. “When you first came in, you said there were a few questions you wanted to ask. Was there something else?"
“Oh no, I’m fine. I’m great even, this is the highlight of my week because you know what screams ‘great week’ for me? Being thrown in to glass and beaten up by a dumb fifteen year old” Isabella said before letting out a small sigh noticing she had probably been a bit too rude. “Sorry, they’re just everywhere and annoying as fuck” She said referring to the bunch of kids that had been running around the town for a while now.
Samuel gave a small nod and offered a sympathetic smile. “There’s no need to apologise. It’s understandable that you’d perhaps be in a bad mood right now,” he responded. “Yes. They’re a little... on the irritating side.”
‘ right, okay. ’ obviously, leo finds the man qualified enough to ask his questions to, or maybe it’s the fact he was never a professional that makes it easy. he won’t though, he’s long since talked himself out of talking about what happened that night, the once subtle shaking of his hands more aggressive than before, the only reminder he had thought about it at all. he shoves them in his pockets. ‘ oh, i was just wondering. i like to get to know people. ’
Samuel’s eyes flickered towards the other’s hands as he shoved them into his pockets, though he tried not to make it too obvious that he had noticed. Something was clearly wrong- after all, it used to be his job to recognise when something was wrong with someone but he didn’t draw attention to it yet. He just smiled politely and nodded. “It’s nice to see that some people still do want to get to know others. Most just tend to keep to themselves nowadays.”
leo sighs, taking a step further into the room. he’s nervous. ‘ i had a few questions to ask, ’ but he doesn’t, not anymore. a split second was enough for him to second guess himself, to talk himself out of speaking his mind. ‘ just one now, really. ’ his polite smile is back in place, hardly winning out the fight with a frown. ‘ were you a doctor before this all started ? ’
“Go ahead,” he responded with a small smile. Samuel looked up at the other as he spoke, squinting a little at the light. “I- well. Medical doctor, no. But I was still well trained to deal with most injuries. Why?”
“I swear to god there’s a reason I never talk to anyone, this being exactly it” muttered Isabella as she dug out the last pieces of glass from her arm, some stupid kid had decided it would be fun to underestimate her and well it had gotten worse than needed. She sighed as she saw a shadow come near and looked up “Can I help you with anything?”
Samuel had been watching the woman pull pieces of glass out of her arm. He debated whether to leave her or whether to go and see if she wanted help for a few moments and in the end, he decided on the latter option. As he approached and she noticed him, he stopped. “I was just wondering if you were okay. That looks pretty nasty,” he commented, nodding towards her arm.
“I’m pretty good for living in a zombie apocalypse. How ‘bout you?”
“Not too bad, thank you.”
Marissa shook her head, looking down at her feet sheepishly, “Uh, no, I was just looking for a familiar face I guess…”
Samuel gave a small smile and sat up properly. “Oh, that’s fine... how are you?”
leo shrugs, lips that were once quirked falling into a frown. ‘ i woke you, didn’t i? ’ regret is evident in his words, and there’s a moment in which he presses his lips into a tight line, considering the situation. ‘ sorry. ’ an apology is always the way to start, it’s something he firmly believes in. ‘ i can wait until you’ve caught more Zs. no problem. ’
“What uh- yeah but, don’t worry about it. It’s fine,” he replied with a small smile. “What can I do for you?”
