were we happier?
“I could before, but not anymore.” It’s hardly a secret that something was taken from him- it would be odd if the council had made a judgement to forgo a punishment for something so dramatic. It was because it was dramatic that he had chosen to follow through on what was once only an idea.
He listens to her ramble- it is a familiar set of an ideas, though one not often expressed to him anymore. Those who were unsympathetic to him would avoid him, and those sympathetic would not pry, or worse, excuse his actions as a mistake.
A mistake would have been corrected- perhaps something still would have gone wrong in that mission with Pascal, but it would not have been so dramatic. It was deliberate, though he found saying so was neither worth the trouble nor the effort.
"The consequences were clear for the first queen- I did not see much beyond that." That much was true, and spoken with a clear certainty- the same certainty that he had shown towards the council, he thinks. Why they had trusted him, in the first place. "Prescience does not prevent mistakes, only warn you of them."
A pause. Though once, he knows he would have stopped there- careful not to spill secrets that were not entirely his own, he thinks that it would not be worse than what has already been done.
"If you knew I was going to toss something at you, to catch it would still require you to react at the right time… or something of that sort."
It's not the perfect analogy, but something simple enough that he was satisfied doing so. Her excuses may have wrung hollow to herself, though to him there was a quiet finality in the idea. It was what he had wanted, and not what he wished for at all- so in short, not a surprise, but hardly a welcome idea.
"… I suppose after what has happened, it would not be surprising if I were to be forced out."
Sanaki does her best to wrap her head around his explanation, though having no personal experience with the abilities of the sibylla, perhaps she was doomed to misunderstand. "I don't know," she hedges, "Catching something out of the air can't be that hard. Did you, like, try and fail? Even with the warning?" The analogy turns sluggishly in her mind. "Or did you fail to try at all?"
Squinting at him doesn't really help, but it does at least make it seem like she's maintaining a healthy level of suspicion. The truth is, she's a little taken aback — has she really become so accustomed to being out of the loop? Because all this feels way too big to be shared so freely.
If only Sanaki was stronger, surely Genevre would already have told her, and none of this would have come as a surprise. But she's not, and now she has all these questions, and...
Hey, at least she doesn't have to worry about offending Sephiran! He's already been stripped of all his clout.
She nods energetically. "I mean, it must be really stressful to live in a building where everyone hates you. If all my friends started staring daggers at me all the time, I'd rather shrivel up and die. Maybe becoming a civilian is for the best?" Is that what he would like to hear? He had sounded so mournful at the thought of leaving, but there's always a silver lining somewhere. Surely he will tell her more if she keeps him in good cheer.
Then again, there's really no better place on Virato than Haven HQ. She probably put her foot in her mouth again. "Have you thought about where you're going to go?"
out of the frying pan and into the fire
Sylvain + Sanaki, infamous (reason +1)
Taking risks isn’t for the faint of heart.
It’s a gamble. A little flare of anticipation that Sylvain chases more often than he’ll admit. Every person is different after all, which means that the reward is never the same. If this Empress weren’t so sharp or lacked the grace to manage their little game, Sylvain could be on his way to wherever the Monastery was holding other nuisances.
In fact, it could have gone a number of ways. This, though? He leans forward, the torchlight hanging over their heads bright enough that he can see the mortification settling over the official’s face. He looks a little like he’s just been told that the Goddess he’s dedicated his life to never existed at all and whatever Sylvain says next will cast him down a path not meant to be recovered from.
Turning to his newest paramour, he hopes that she can read the admiration shining in expression even as his lips twist, desperate. “You’d have me debase myself? To the church?” For a moment, he sounds just like any upstanding noble citizen of Faeghus should.
Here’s hoping the Goddess has a sense of humor.
Defeated, he allows his shoulders to slump, raising her hand to press his lips against cool fingers. “For you, I’ll do anything.” He can hear the bishop’s barely whispered, Saints help me… and it’s all he can do to keep his expression from lifting. “Even if my past actions mean that I’m banned from stepping in the church again, it’ll be worth it.”
Letting go of her hand, he keeps close to her side as he turns toward the bishop instead, looking more and more like he wanted to flee the scene. Good. “My love, my Empress, on the day of the battle, when she laid her hands on me, I-” Sylvain can’t remember the last time he backed down from a challenge, especially when he had the winning hand. It’s too easy to describe it, like reading a novel he’s memorized by heart. He know how to spin a rapid-fire descent into madness, where desire overwrites rational thought. Sylvain would have crumbled easily. After all, the empress was new, and it was all too easy to fall in to bad habits.
It’s a feeling he knows well, after all.
Predictably, the bishop folds before the theoretical clothes hit the floor, so Sylvain thinks he will still be welcome here. “Enough!” Oh. He’s angry - Sylvain’s expression runs toward alarm. “You,” Somehow, the angry, accusing finger is pointed at him. As if the woman on trial is no longer the main priority. “Do not say another word. And you-” He’s remembered her after all, anger fading into something more complicated. His head shakes. “I…will be documenting this incident. However. For now, I have no further questions.”
He leaves them, but Sylvain gets the feeling that they’re still being watched so he inches a little closer as if he seeks affection. Then, because he doesn’t truly know her, he tips his head downward, covering his mouth with his palm as he whispers, “Someone’s still around. So…what do you say? Am I forgiven?”
What, is it really such a momentous ask? If every petitioner that the former Apostle had ever entertained spoke of torrid love affairs instead of issues of real importance, Sanaki's duties would have been far more, well, entertaining. Perhaps the clergymen of Fodlan are not so unconventional. How inane.
Nevertheless, Sanaki correctly interprets the slimy, wet, horrid, disgusting press of lips (ew) to her hand as a signal to immediately stop listening. An enormous gift of trust, to decide that whatever comes out of the redhead's mouth is none of her concern, but what a relief it is, to fix her gaze impassively on the bishop's face and fail to pay attention! Her thoughts turn to pleasant daydreams — the stun spell she has nearly perfected; the stash of shortbread cookies hidden under her desk; the missive that still rests upon it, unsent and hopeful…
When she comes back to herself, the bishop is scurrying away, looking like he wants to drown in lye as penitence. He will be documenting this incident? She thinks not. It would permanently stain his soul to even think about these events again.
The corners of her eyes lift briefly, even as her shoulders slump. One pestilence cleansed, one remaining.
"I cannot grant forgiveness for what you have never done," she hisses under her breath, straightforward as is her nature. "You absolute buffoon! Do you make a habit of accosting unsuspecting women and touching them without express permission?" Yes, definitely, judging from the Bishop's unmeasured response, but it is also a relief to state the obvious. "And spinning wild yarns regardless of their true temperament? We are strangers, if you recall!"
Moreover, what is she to do with him now? Too many watchful eyes around to simply discard him, but she would prefer to adjourn to a location that discourages rumors of illicit attachments and criminal activity alike…
Back to the ashen wreckage it is, then. The scene of the crime — utterly unromantic in its desolation, and a foolish place to be found if she had indeed started the fire (which, she would like to emphasize, she did not). Sanaki glares at her companion with great resentment, the expression hidden from public view by his towering frame. "Fine. Come with me."

sanaki remembers the appropriate title just before she opens her mouth. "...professor azama? I have never attended any of his classes," she says, feigning ignorance. "what do most students think of him?"
in truth, what she has learned of his reputation is as varied as it is fascinating. and none of his apparent faults --- his lack of decorum and provocative humor chief among them --- are unforgivable. but acquaintances without a history of conflict are so much easier to forgive.
she huffs a dry laugh. "my current opinion of him is not any better than theirs, I'm afraid. but it certainly is different."

"...oh, how can I apologize to her?" sanaki intones despondently.
she pauses for a long moment, apparently deep in thought. it is difficult to tell whether she is enjoying her recollection of the events in question.
and then her gaze wanders shiftily to the side. "well, the fault was only half mine," she reasons stubbornly.

"when we first met, I thought I had him all figured out. he's proven me wrong, of course. not with words, but with actions."
taciturn as the swordsman may be, he says enough for those with the intent to listen. but even then, it seems to belie his true feelings.
"perhaps he will do so again. I cannot even deny that I look forward to it." sanaki pauses, mildly startled, then offers a wry smile. "...how troubling."

a snicker tumbles from her, clearly at rowan's expense. "what kind of---" backwater, derelict, run-down, "kingdom would have him as a ruler, indeed? I do find myself rather curious. a funny little moppet, that one."

"she is gentle, soft spoken, good with a bow. but I'm only stating facts obvious at a glance."
why, was sanaki meant to make value judgements of substance based on appearances alone? appearances can be deceiving. sanaki knew that all too well.
sanaki shrugs. "in my opinion, as a newcomer, she should better establish herself within the community first and foremost. if sue wishes to be known---" sanaki continues, not unkindly, for she does sincerely mean if, "she must make herself known."

"what prince leo really needs is a hobby," sanaki prescribes, nodding to herself. "one that sufficiently exhausts his mind, but doesn't exacerbate his neurotic nature..."
canoe jousting? wyvern painting? fistfighting at the house of flapjacks? stirring up monastery gossip?
ah, he doesn't seem good-humored enough for any of that.
"...don't look at me." she frowns. "i have better things to do than entertain some moody noble, however sympathetic his troubles are. let me amend my statement," she declares, "what prince leo really needs are friends."

"andrei," she pauses as the man himself had, "of yngvi. i certainly know more of his homeland now than when we first met. still, i am the proud owner of the most beautiful pigeon in the world, in no small part thanks to him, so he has my gratitude for his kind guidance on the matter."
another pause. "...what do you mean, he has returned underground?" in the literal sense? as in, to the sewers? does lady edain know about this? "well! i suppose such behavior does suit him," sanaki decides, mystified, "and is acceptable as long as cranberry is still seeing sunlight."
after all, she would be sorely disappointed if he failed to follow his own advice.

"ephraim is not the first monarch i've met who prefers the battlefield to the banquet hall," sanaki sighs, "nor will he be the last. if his countrymen are of the same temperament, that boorish nature may even work in his favor."
once upon a time, she might have remarked that such hunger for violence is unnatural for beorc --- but that is yet another notion she must rid herself of.
"it was good to see him at the ball, uncomfortable as he clearly was." a flicker of a smile. "perhaps, come next year... he might graduate from being stuck at the hip to his sister?"

"I really should have offended her more." a rather honest admission, judgment and prescription both. why didn't the noblewoman bristle at sanaki's command? why didn't sanaki prod further?
sanaki knows why. the compassion with which edain had shown mercy, the resolve with which she had withdrawn it just as swiftly --- these are more important than sanaki's little games.
"lady edain is a kind woman. sensible and balanced in the way that often comes with age." sanaki smiles, without a trace of bitterness. "that must be why faith magic is as easy to her as breathing."

if she had time to spare, sanaki might have given an honest effort to tail the boy personally. where does he go when he's not in class? would it be where he acquires his tomes from? those tomes which have proved impossible to find in all the regular places?
alas, there are more important matters to occupy her attention. perhaps she could hire someone --- but, ah, inviting trouble with house hevring would not be a particularly intelligent play.
she shrugs for now. "I don't know him very well. he was always either skipping or sleeping."

"I like soren more now that I don't see him every day," sanaki decides. distance makes the heart grow fonder, or so they say... but she immediately grimaces at that thought in connection with the subject at hand.
"he was of tremendous use to me. I would say I owe him a great debt, but I already paid for it in gold." she hums. "behind that sharp tongue is advice usually worth listening to --- as long as you don't let him run you in circles."

sanaki squints. what information about darios is she permitted to disclose? she would like to consider herself good at keeping secrets ---though she's honestly not sure how she even came into possession of more than a few of his.
in the end, she only offers enigmatically: "it would be easier if he was normal."
