5 INCARNATIONS OF LORD VISHNU - SRI RANGANATHASWAMY TEMPLE
Lord Vishnu is one of the three main principal Hindu deities. Many Hindus refer to Lord Vishnu as Para Brahma, which means supreme God. According to Hindu mythology, Vishnu is known to be the ‘Preserver’ within the Trimurti along with Brahma and Shiva. Within Hindu Vaishnavism, Vishnu is considered to be the highest form of God and has qualities such as limitless, absolute, and the primal soul of the universe.
It is believed that whenever the world faces any major threat, chaos, or is fighting against mammoth destructive forces, Lord Vishnu comes in different forms to save his devotees.
Speaking of his incarnations or Lord Vishnu names, the count is infinite. Let’s look at some of his incarnations:
1. Matsya:
Matsya is one of the most widely known Lord Vishnu names and avatars. According to some mythological experts, Manu was the first human on earth. And once, he was stuck in a severe flood. To save him, Lord Vishnu incarnated into Matsya, a gigantic fish that saved the life of Manu. And that marked as the beginning of Satya Yug.
2. Narsimha:
Hiranyakashipu was an evil who had come with a blessing that he cannot be harmed or killed by a human or animal. That’s not all, he also had the protection that ensured that he won’t be killed inside the house or outside and neither at day nor at night. And no weapon would be enough to kill him. To win over such a powerful evil, Lord Vishnu incarnated into Narsimha, half-human and half-lion. And killed the demon with his nails.
3. Sri Ranganatha:
An incarnation of Lord Vishnu that is popular in South India, is Lord Vishnu in his resting form. According to some, the partner of Sri Ranganatha was Goddess Laxmi, also referred to as Ranganayaki. The Sri Ranganatha temple is one of the most worshipped temples of Lord Vishnu. In South India, amongst other Lord Vishnu names, Sri Ranganatha is the most popular one. Many people think that he is not just resting but listening to all his devotees' worries and blessing them. You might be surprised to know that Sri Ranganatha temple is said to be the world’s largest Hindu functioning temple. If you are a Lord Vishnu devotee, you must visit the Sri Ranganatha temple at least once in your lifetime.
4. Venkateshwara:
You may have probably heard of the Venkateshwara temple as it one of the oldest temples in our country. Another temple located in South India. Another popular incarnation of Lord Vishnu and popular Lord Vishnu names is Venkateshwara. There’s an interesting story associated with Lord Venkateshwara, but we’ll save that for our next article. What’s important to know that this entire temple is built with gold. In South India, Sri Ranganatha temple and Sri Venkateshwara temple (Tirupati temple) are two of the most popular Vishnu God temples.
5. Krishna:
Another most popular incarnation of Lord Vishnu is Krishna. Many of you already know the story of Lord Krishna. There are several Krishna temples around the country. Some of the most popular ones include Vittal Rukmini Temple, Iskon Temple, Bankey Bihari Temple, and more.
