The Sanditon Lighthouse was built in the early 1870s and first lit in 1875. It was closed after an incident in 1918 and a new lighthouse was built further up the coast. However, since its closure, there have been continuing reports of people seeing lights despite the lighthouse being abandoned.

In 1972, the Sanditon Lighthouse Historical Society was formed and the group was able to raise funds to make some restorations and have the site designated a historic landmark in time for the building’s centennial.

The volunteers of the Sanditon Lighthouse Historical Society continue to maintain the property and the lighthouse is open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays 1-4pm.

May 13, 1846: The Mexican-American War Begins

On this day in 1846, U.S. Congress declared war on Mexico. The Mexican-American War was a defining event for both nations, transforming a continent and forging a new identity for its peoples. By the war’s end in 1848, Mexico had lost nearly half of its territory (the present American Southwest from Texas to California) and the United States had become a continental power. An exciting day in Californian history: in 1903 Teddy Roosevelt became the first president to have official activity recorded on moving-picture film whilst on a trip to Sanditon's neighbour, San Francisco. In light of San Francisco's Pemberley Digital and it's great success in both film and new digital media innovations like Domino, which will be beta testing here in Sanditon, this historic capture seems almost prophetic!

May 12th 1937: George VI crowned

On this day in 1937, the coronation of King George VI of the United Kingdom was held at Westminster Abbey, London. He became King upon the abdication of his older brother (Edward VIII) who left the throne in order to marry divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. George never expected to become King, but when the role was thrust upon him became one of Britain’s most loved monarchs. He ruled during the Second World War, and he and his wife Elizabeth were a great morale boost for the nation. He was also monarch during the dissolution of the British Empire. He died on 6th February 1952, and his oldest daughter Elizabeth became Queen. Elizabeth II rules to this day.

Hospitality and health for Domino demo A Sanditon bed and breakfast and the town’s growing health industry will be front and center in the upcoming Domino beta test. “I’m super-excited to be spending my summer [in Sanditon],” said Pemberley Digital’s Gigi Darcy in a recent interview. “I’m staying at the most adorable B&B and I think it’ll be a really fun time, when I’m not busy running the beta test, of course.” Ms Darcy said the enthusiasm from local businesses, as well as the mayor, made Sanditon stand out as a potential partner community for Pemberley Digital’s new video network application. “The application and supporting material were just amazing, and gave the picture of a real up-and-coming, exciting place to be.” Local spas and health clubs could expect to see a lot of Ms Darcy in the coming weeks. “I hear the town is all about health and fitness,” she said. “Maybe I’ll take up a new sport!”

RIP Li'l Jawsica: Shark, Hero, Friend

At approximately 2:03 AM on May 11th, 2013, Jawsica “Li’l Jawsica” Sharkson was found dead in her tank at the Sanditon Zoo. Early autopsy reports attribute the sudden passing of the beloved town shark to the accidental swallowing of a curling iron. There is no word yet as to the origins of the curling iron, although Private Investigator Rammi Glomp has alleged evidence to suggest that citizens of the town of Dolphinton, CA are to blame.

The Department of Parks & Recreation is hosting a memorial service tomorrow evening (Sunday, May 12th) near the Sanditon Pier. All townspeople are welcome, and citizens are encouraged to contribute food, entertainment, and/or manpower to the event.

Rest in peace, Li’l Jawsica.

Any donations collected tomorrow will go to the Sanditon Department of Parks and Recreation to help rid our beaches and waters of curling irons.

We were incredibly saddened to hear of the death of a Sanditon icon, Jawsica Sharkson, today. Jawsica was an absolute legend, and her death day, which she shares with Italian missionary Matteo Ricci, 2nd Earl of Dunfermline Charles Seton, reggae singer Bob Marley, and famed Italian violin maker Francesco Stradivari, is reflective of that.

To celebrate Jawsica's life, we will be offering free admission the day of her funeral.
