Ocean Spray I was able to skip out of work slightly early this evening. Headed to the Hook and watched the sun sink behind a very distant thunderstorm. It appeared sunset wasn't going to be too interesting. But then, things started turning blazing pink. I went to my favorite spot (parking lot C) to photograph the waves crashing on the rocks that the Park Service has placed on the shoreline. This is a great location for evening and morning low-light photography. If you can time it right you can capture gold here. A large wave came in, I hit the button on my camera's remote, the shutter slammed shut and I froze this moment in time. Forever. I actually had to pull my camera away from the incoming wave at the last second. It was the closest call I've had to saltwater destroying my equipment. I love the Hook.
An End to a New Day Sandy Hook, NJ These are the first photographs I’ve taken from Sandy Hook in well over half a year. It felt great to be back out there. Like I was officially home. A few black-crowned night herons emerged from their day time roosts. A spectacular cloud of offshore fog snaked along the shoreline.

Exactly one year ago today, I captured this photograph bay-side on Sandy Hook. It's a textbook Jersey shore photograph. Water, something old, a stellar sunset, crashing waves, radiating warmth, all of the elements a photographer could want are present. It has been half a year since Sandy Hook opened its gates to the hoards of beach-goers, surfers, tourists, locals, birdwatchers, photographers, cyclists, joggers, fisherman, dog-walkers and nature lovers that frequent this special spit of land. I have frequented The Hook (as us locals know it) since childhood. I've always loved it. It's become a part of me. My springs and summers in New Jersey would be cold and incomplete without it. I need it. So, join me in celebration of the re-opneing of The Hook after hurricane Sandy. Hundreds of volunteers and park officials have worked diligently to bring it back to us, to you. Cheers!
