“I’m Andrew.” The man watched Alec curiously. (He had no idea how to feel about the attention and it made him stiffen.) “Based on what I’ve seen on TV I expected you to be… different.”

/ Magnus smiled softly. “You’re different.”

Alec’s eyebrow bounced up as his heart raced. “Oh. Bad different or good different?”

“Very good.” /

“I mean… Not bad. Just… Different.”

Alec let the still trembling, massive dog hide behind him, kept a protective stance in front of her. His voice was soft although the words were hard as steel. “No one on this team is allowed to give up on her. Understood? We’re not the kind of people who give up on someone because they’re difficult.” If the words were aimed at a certain someone… No one would ever have to know.

/ “So, Alexander… What do kids do for fun around here?”

Alec blinked. Once, twice. “I… have no idea.”

Magnus started to giggle good naturedly, and Alec found himself joining it. He stopped abruptly and looked away upon hearing his parents. By the time he turned his gaze back Magnus was gone. Alec thought that the other was a trick of his imagination until they met again two days later. /

Jace arched an eyebrow. “I’m not an expert of this stuff but… There’s this really weird energy between you and that guy. Do you… know, know him?”

Against his will Alec glanced towards where Magnus laughed with one of the other dancers. As beautiful and distant as a star. Imagining that you know someone and actually knowing them are two different things. “I don’t.”

It was always the same old story. Magnus messed up and fate took another person from him. He hadn’t found the love he craved for because he didn’t deserve it. He never would. How many good people would have to be taken from the world before he’d learn his lesson? Magnus decided that he was done with lessons from fate.

Magnus tilted his head. “I can see that you’re thinking very hard right now.” It wasn’t exactly subtle. They spun around each other elegantly, and the cameras filming loved every second of it. “About something you can’t get out of your head? Or someone?”

Alec’s jawline tightened. “I’m used to things I can’t get out of my head.” He kept his voice so low that only Magnus heard him. “I’m sick of not getting people out of my heart.”

No one else was able to utter a sound so the burden of having to voice the question fell on Magnus. “What about…?” He wasn’t strong or courageous enough to utter the name, and despised himself for it.

The apology in the doctor’s eyes slammed all air from his lungs. “We did everything we could but his injuries… They were too extensive.”

Magnus kept talking and instructing him as though the filming crew wasn’t there, a picture of elegance and skill, like all their secret history didn’t matter. It was absolutely maddening. Alec had to use all his self-control to not give away his mental state.

Finally it was just the two of them left. Magnus clapped his hands together and spun around. “I’ll…”

“I’ll dance with you. That’s what I signed up for.” Alec’s voice was tight from the storm he held back. “But I won’t deal with this pretend game. I refuse to pretend that you didn't shatter my heart.”

Magnus stared. Unable to process, unwilling to comprehend the words. Yet the woman’s facial expression communicated everything necessary. “What?”

She sighed. “I’m so sorry, Magnus. But he’s gone.”

Magnus groaned and flopped elegantly on his couch, not spilling even a drop of his stiff drink. The red thread around his wrist, invisible to others and true mockery from fate, burned like acid. “If even the person I’m destined to be with doesn’t want me… Then what’s the point in trying? I believe that I’m finally out of fool’s hope.”

“You were supposed to be my father and believe in me. You haven’t even believed in me as my boss. So what point is there in pretending anything else now?”

Robert couldn’t say anything to that, and the silence was deafening. For a while. “What he did… Is that why you can’t desire women? Why you’re still in the middle of that endless phase where you…?”

They were locked into a heated staring contest, during which adrenaline and electricity crackled between them so intensely that it was difficult to breathe. Eventually Alec’s spiraling mind couldn’t handle the silence and stillness any longer. “What are you ogling at me for? Don’t you want to punish me for disappointing you? Slap me, yell at me, laugh at me. Just get it over with! Just…!”

“He has to be punished!” Jace’s eyes blazed. “You can’t just let him get away with it all!”

“I don’t want courtroom battles where everyone will stare at me, judge me and wonder if I’m lying! Do you have any idea how public and ugly it would be?” Even imagining the gossip and the tabloid headlines… “I just want to forget, so I can try to heal and scramble forward from this!”

Jace, Izzy and Robert all had their opinions. Once again no one appeared to be interested in Alec’s opinion.

“Kiss me.” Magnus sounded drunk. Was he? What if…? Surprisingly soft, desperate hands were pressed against Alec’s cheeks. “Kiss me like it means something. Help me feel less pathetic.”

It was quite possibly a mistake. But how was Alec supposed to refuse? Ignoring the voice in his head hissing how disgusting the deed was, he pressed his lips against Magnus’.
