Magnus pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. He didn’t have the strength to… “Alexander, if you have to… Just go.”

“I don’t want to go anywhere. So I won’t.” There was a heartbreaking hint of hesitation in Alec’s voice. “Unless… you want me to leave.”

MALEC MONDAY MINI

Magnus closed his eyes and sighed exhaustedly. The man’s features were tight from pain. “Our lives… They can’t ever be the same again. Things have to change.”

“I know”, Alec agreed quietly. His hand tightened experimentally around Magnus’. “Will you forgive me if I struggle with that change sometimes?”

“You need help. Can you see that?” Magnus sounded remarkably calm, considering the circumstances, but also scared.

“I’m fine”, Alec hissed.

“You’re not. Stop lying to me.” Magnus’ voice sharpened for only a second. “I can’t force you to get the help you need to be alright one day. No one can. It’s a decision you have to make yourself.”

Alec’s eyes rose to meet his. The way light had gone out of them… It was chilling. “Without him… Jace, I can’t.”

Jace sighed heavily. A love like the one shared by Alec and Magnus… It was truly terrifying to him. Even more frightening was sensing how much Alec meant his words. “I know.”

Alec’s fists pummeled Jace’s chest with all his might. Which, in the man’s current condition, wasn’t much. “LET ME GO!” Alec howled, sounding more wounded than the blond had ever heard him. “GET OFF ME AND LET ME GO!”

Jace shook his head, over and over again. Neither of them noticed the sudden bout of pouring rain. “Do you seriously imagine that Magnus would want me to?”

His hand tightened around the other’s. Shy and careful despite how familiar the currently unnaturally cold skin was. Building up sobs forced him to whisper. “I know how strong you are, I’ve seen it too many times. So please…” He gasped for air. “Fight this, because… We have to make it through this together.”

/ “And Alexander?” Magnus yawned, wearing off adrenaline getting to him. “Wherever you go, I’ll follow you. Even if it’s to fire or the darkest pits of hell. Keep that in mind and learn to look after yourself. Garroway may be your boss but you answer to me, now.”

Much later Alec regretted not taking Magnus’ overdramatic, half-asleep declaration more seriously, not seeing it as foreshadowing. /

/ Alec blinked once, twice. Then coughed. “Magnus? What… are you doing here?”

Magnus stared at him in utter disbelief. Then snorted. “Are you kidding me? You run into a burning kitchen. Where else do you expect me to be?” /

/ Alec coughed, and coughed. He knew that it would’ve been the smartest to just breathe and relax but couldn’t bring himself to. “… be mad at me … didn’t do anything stupid this time …”

Magnus shook his head and sniffled. “You’re going to wreck my sanity one day, Alexander. You’re lucky I love you so much.” The man’s eyes widened as he realized what he let slip.

Alec’s heart jumped wildly. A new coughing fit didn’t stop him from responding. “I love you, too.” /

Luke sighed wearily, visibly bracing himself. “Alec… There’s something I have to tell you. And I need you to stay calm, because no one actually knows what’s going on at this point.” Those words, well-meaning as they were, naturally had the exact opposite impact.

Alec tensed up so much that his body hurt. “I swear. If you don’t spit it out right now…”

“Shhh.” Did Magnus’ voice come from some other world? “It’s okay. I’m not mad, I won’t punish you. Just keep your eyes closed and hold on to me.”

Alec did hold on, almost literally for dear life.

“… Magnus …”

The nurse brightened to a small smile. “Don’t worry. He asked me to tell you that he’ll be back. Try to get some more rest, you need it.”

Why was it so hard for Alec to believe that? To trust that? His instincts… They screamed that something was wrong, yet his physical state knocked him out before he could process the matter more thoroughly. His dreams were restless.

Magnus tried to move but his muscles refused to listen to his commands. He wasn’t able to scream, either. Such helplessness…

“Try to breathe more calmly. It’d be disappointing if hyperventilation made you pass out.” The voice was barely comprehensible from how badly it echoed. “If you play along nicely, I may be in a good enough mood to share a secret.”

It was such a wonderful dream. Such a love memory. Alec sighed, reluctant to let go of it. Eager to anchor himself on something positive, he reached out, trusting that a familiar hand would be there.

He met thin air.
