it takes no otherworldly senses to realize he’s scared the guy. as it is, the stranger’s pulse is fast in his ears, spiked with heavy handed adrenaline.

“—— phone?” feet shift. he supposes that’s a natural response. it still has his tongue grow heavy, accent weighing down his words. “nah. it’s… broke.” he regrets this. clearly the guy is fine on his own. fingers sift through hair, trying and failing to think of an escape that might seem halfway normal.

he can’t. oh well. “…okay. good luck.”

          whoever he was. he didn’t sound local, not even to this town, and certainly not in the sense of the country. it definitely was foreign. european? for now, the man appears discomforted and not in any way threatening, and poe’s feeling a little apologetic now, as if he’d been the one who caused it.   “ it’s cool. just my luck right? car breaking down in the middle of nowhere. ” 

        he releases a little chuckle as he turns to look at his engine once more, wiping his fingers resignedly on a greasy rag before slamming the hood of his car shut. here’s to hoping this town has better sheriffs than it appears. “ doesn’t look like i can do any more for it tonight without a light. sounds like a good time for a drink then. ” grabbing his duffel bag from the passenger seat, he trudged up to the two-lane gravel, before turning once more to the stranger, raising a brow, “ wanna go grab a beer at the bar you talked about? ”

brows raise in mute disbelief. he curbs the desire to turn around, as if someone else could possibly be there, the true recipient of this invitation. why on earth would he want vasile’s company? isn’t he scared?

there’s no graceful way to refuse. he isn’t altogether sure he wants to anyway — it’s been weeks since he’s had any sort of company. it won’t end well, in all likelihood, but there seems no harm in just having a drink.

“um.” shit, does he have money? could he surreptitiously lift some cash from a patron at the bar? “yeah, sure. ‘s down this way.”

those words are too good to be true.

for one thing, poe’s voice has gone liquor soft, and nothing said under weight of so many beers will ever hold up in day. but it’s also that he just wants it too much. it’s the small scribbled secret tucked under his ribs, some scrap of old hope he’s tried to forget.

vasile knows better than to trust good luck. your deepest desires didn’t drop in your lap, and nothing good came without paying a price. for him, the currency oft came in BLOOD. it’s not something he’s willing to risk, in this case.

so he brings his own beer back to his lips. looks away. with luck, poe will forget by the next day — and after this, they won’t be meeting again.

the muttered expletive is in his own tongue, harsh words made melodic in the soft tone. getting there wasn’t what concerned him most — it’s making sure he can do it safely. it’s hardly his own skin he’s concerned about: the girl’s pulse skitters wildly at his back, clinging to his shirt like he’s her salvation.

he isn’t. but he’s reasonably the lesser of two evils, at the present.

“fine.” and he has no time to say more than that. the thing charges, a rush of red eyes and yellowed claws that he knows hadn’t been there a moment before. it’s not enough time to turn around, but he’s fast enough to at least step back, body between her and the oncoming charge. there’s a knife edged sting across his left cheek, but he doesn’t try to retaliate. the moment the creature has fully run by, vasile turns, lifting her easily as a rag doll and turning the opposite way.

that thing is quick, but he’s much quicker. he also doesn’t know the way. streets flash by, hazy. ( so much for not giving himself away. ) “tell me where to go.”

“ — what?” eyes dart up towards his face as she questions him under his breath, not sure if she hadn’t been listening or if he’d just spoken in a language she didn’t understand. it doesn’t matter, in the end, he hadn’t pushed her to LEAVE, and she’s happy with that, ducking behind him as she resists her urge to scream.

she barely manages, biting down on her lip with a whine as she closes her eyes. she should’ve stayed home. this was why she should’ve stayed home. where she was safe, and there were wards, and things like this couldn’t get IN. her eyes are still closed, honestly, even as her feet leave the ground.

and so it takes a second to sink in. and then another.

god, either her luck was grand, or very, very bad. she couldn’t quite put her finger on it either way. “ — left. left on the next block, my car is — parked on … 1st.” she’s nearly out of BREATH, not even sure why, fingers curling in his shirt even more insistently than before. she’d have to remember to ASK about it later. what he was. or how he could move so FAST, anyway. for now though, the thought was secondary, at best.

her heartbeat’s untethered. either she’s more scared now that he’s lowered his guise, or it’s just the kick of adrenaline as the wind tears past their face. either way, he’s not likely to find out. once she’s safe back in her house, vasile won’t be sticking around.

soles skid to a stop at the specified street. dark eyes dart between the few cars sidled up against the curb, one ear listening for pursuit. he’s vaguely aware that the cut is still bleeding; he sets her down, wiping the heel of his palm against her cheek.

whatever is after them ( after her ) is still coming. he can hear it a few blocks off. eyes shift to her, somber, question held in the arch of one brow. “— can you drive?”
