🔥 talk to me about how LF treats pocs.
@flightlegacy || flames for unpopular opinions || accepting
Yeah I’m not going to put this under a cut.
(Full disclaimer: I’m a white woman and come from privilege! Check me if I make a wreck of myself)
I think there are some very wonderful things LF has done in recent years with the new trilogy. The importance of having a trio like we do; the diversity of the Rogue One ensemble cast; reflecting today’s rise of fascism with the rise of the First Order–there are places where LF is taking recognizing that in the 21st Century, it’s not acceptable to have a mostly white one.
However–LF has failed spectacularly in taking responsibility for the importance of representative fiction. While it’s a thinly veiled secret I did not care for RO, J/yn Er/so’s line of ‘it’s not a problem if you don’t look up’ illustrates this issue perfectly. While she was meant to be introduced as an imperfect hero, in today’s culture and media, she only came off as privileged, not gray-moraled or conflicted. In the real world, while awful, awful things happen to women, white women only know a microsom of the issues of WOC–it was irresponsible writing to ask the audience to sympathize with that line.
And it’s irresponsible to not understand how flagrantly problematic it was to introduce one of the darkest torture tactics to a man of color that is defenseless and leave it as a moment of power to a white woman (TFA and Kylo’s mind fuckery) who was on an even playing field with the assailant and could defend herself. It’s irresponsible to ask audience members to ‘not expect’ openly LGBT characters on screen (touching on this point because the best chance is now for interracial gay with Finn and Poe). Yes, while there are tons within the extended media (talking mainly about new-age Disney fiction at this moment, not Legends canon), the films have the widest audiences. Having gay characters shouldn’t be an argument of ‘well, does it fit?’ when LF has been asking me to accept convoluted hetero romances for years. It was also p awful to have the most diverse cast ever for a SW film (RO), be the first film where most of the characters died.
See what I mean?
To give POC as rich and varied and beautiful stories as the white characters we’ve known and loved for decades is to recognize representative media for what it is: validating and valuing voices as important as privileged voices we’ve seen for years.
LF has “woken up” enough to see that diversity is important, but refuses to accept responsibility for the writing it creates and still does not understand that fiction does not exist in a vacuum. Sure, yes, it is wildly vital to have these characters, but if Leia Organa can live through everything she’s gone through, so should have Shara Bey and Steela Gerrerra.
Flightlegacy is an absolutely wonderful Poe Dameron and the mun is such a complete and utter joy to talk with ooc. Every interaction that we've had has been amazing, and seeing them on my dash makes me so happy. /// @flightlegacy /// Submitted By Anonymous
ruvaania certainly isn’t large, by any means, nor rich with minerals, nor considered anything less than unforgiving, yet that is why his parents have survived SO LONG without choosing any particular side -- at least not publicly. illya remains skeptical, for his part, although he knows they’re hardly willing to listen when he tells them that silence is hardly a good disguise, that eventually the empire is bound to catch wind of their secret meetings with notable members of the rebel alliance.
not that he OBJECTS to these meetings in the first place. as a matter of fact, he supports them wholeheartedly in his strange and stoic way, but he knows their secrets may get them all killed someday, and naturally, he’s inclined to AVOID that potential inevitability.
if they’re expecting a visit, or even a fly-through, from one of their rebel friends, nobody’s told him about it, which rather explains his surprise at the appearance of poe dameron in their courtyard. they’re not CLOSELY acquainted, particularly, and illya would never openly profess curiosity about the pilot. ( although he catches himself wishing that the hems of his long coat weren’t dirtied from his time at the stables this morning, and quickly, he forces his thoughts elsewhere. )
❛ commander dameron, ❜ the prince keeps his voice as even as he can, even tries to make it LIGHT, although most would not characterize it that way. drawing a few steps closer, he gives a dip of his head, the closest he gets to any sort of bow of respect. ( he may not ENJOY the realities of being born nobility, but he certainly doesn’t think himself LESS for it. ) ❛ do you plan to make a HABIT of showing up unannounced, or did you manage to hail the king and queen a full hour before your landing? ❜ a joke, though possibly not one particularly well conceived.
@flightlegacy wants prince illya !!
@flightlegacy.
