“ If it were up to me, I would be taking in all of the refugees. “
Either you have no idea how many there are or you are completely nuts.
“ Assimilation is Oppression …”
Forced assimilation perhaps (see treatment of Aboriginal people in Canada and Australia), but assimilation itself is not.
“ …America should play no part in trying to impose its culture onto refugees. “
So you are against refugees in America then? Because obviously refugees in America are going to adapt to American society and become at least somewhat “assimilated”. Give it two generations and most people will have forgotten they are immigrants.
“ American culture is lined with patriarchy …”
I see you know nothing of the people you think you are defending. Hint; Arab societies are patriarchal. This article is from before the war : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/8460522.stm
Technically Syrians are classified as “white”. So no problems there.
“… into a situation that is arguably worse than the one they were escaping from.“
You think being in a white-christian-cisheteropatriachy is worse than living in Syria?
If that’s the case why are you advocating taking in all the refugees into such an oppressive society? You monster!!!
“ I want them to preserve their individuality and uniqueness. “
So patriarchy is bad, smash the patriarchy!!! Except when the sweet innocent Muslims do it.
Yeah nothing ironic about this.
“ We colonized them physically once before, and it would break my heart again to watch us colonize their minds when they flee here. “
America didn’t colonise Syria. Syria was not a European colony at all! (Unless you count Turks).
With the breakup of the Ottoman empire, of which Syria was a part, following World War One Syria was a under a French Mandate. This only lasted from 1920 to the French-Syrian treaty in 1936.
“ So please, if you ever meet a refugee, don’t push them to do anything they are uncomfortable with. “
Like live up to the same standards of behaviour as everyone else?
“ It is the compassionate thing to do. “
It’s the “soft bigotry of low expectations”.
