NUTCRACKER AU SKETCH AVALANCHE! *whomp* I’ve been using this silly idea as a way to sketch and explore on the ipad using the Procreate App (terrible name, good app).

The basic story idea is that Christine finds a saves an ugly, old Nutcracker from being thrown out of the Garnier’s prop department. After a surreal battle with some rodents of unusal sizes, Christine’s Nutcracker comes to life and whisks her away into some strange winter land, hoping that she can help him break the spell that makes him a giant, creepy nutcracker. They both decide to “enlist”  (i.e., ambiguously kidnap) the powers of the Sugarplum Fairy who is under the possession of this Rat King Guy. Magic questing chaos ensues!

Free Indigenous Language  Learning Apps

It is believed that Spanish or Portuguese are the most important languages of Latinidad. However, there are millions of people that speak many indigenous languages throughout Latin America. Spanish and Portuguese languages are one thing that unites most of Latin America, but those languages were imposed on the region through European colonization. It’s one reason some Mexican writers have rejected Spanish to write in indigenous languages.

There are some apps that can can be used to help you learn some indigenous languages of Latin America. Unfortunately, there aren’t many, but here are a few resources:

1. Náhuatl - With an estimated 1.5 million speakers, Náhuatl is the most commonly spoken indigenous language in Mexico.

2. Mixtec - The Mixtec languages belong to the Otomanguean language family of Mexico and they are spoken by over half a million people, and can include up to 50 different dialects.

3. Quechua - Quechua is one of the most widely spoken indigenous languages in the Americas and encompasses many different dialects. The Quechua people primarily live in the Andes and highland regions of South America and include nearly 8 million people.

4. Purépecha - The Purépecha or Tarascans are a group of indigenous people centered in the northwestern region of Michoacán, Mexico. The languages is spoken by a quarter-million people.

5. Jopará (Guaraní) - Jopará is a dialect of the Guaraní indigenous language and is spoken in Paraguay. The majority of Paraguayans speak some form of this dialect, as it is a mixture of Guaraní and Spanish loan words.

2. Instituto de Investigación de la Amazonía Peruana (IIAP) - the IIAP has created apps for learning indigenous languages from the Amazon region of Peru and Brazil. Though these apps are geared for children, they are helpful for beginning to familiarize yourself with the languages: available on Android (Spanish only)

After doing extensive research, these were the only free apps I was able to find, but if you know of any other free apps for learning indigenous languages of Latin America, please add on!

Do you have any resources about Mohawk people? I'm mostly looking for what medicines and methods that they used to treat injuries and sickness. And what other indigenous people of North America were there?

I don’t, but I can put something together right here. All the links below contain the information about them and what you’re looking for. Though some topics are a little more difficult to find sources on. If there’s something that you really want to know, than I suggest contacting an actual Native American, specifically a Mohawk to ask.

They do have official websites and places such as a museum and communities that you can ask. Even on Tumblr, you may be able to find someone to discuss it with (via Diversity Cross Check). If not, there’s Reddit: Native American (Reddit: Indian Country - By Native, About Natives & The Americas) and many Native American authors that are open to educating and/or assisting you to write accurate, non-stereotypical and non-colonialist mindset portrayal of Native American characters.

A friend of mine with a passion for folklore and small presses recently introduced me to Inhabit Media, and I’m so glad to have had a chance to peruse these books. 

Inhabit Media is an Inuit-owned publishing company based in Iqaluit, Nunavut (i.e. very very very North). They are dedicated to preserving and promoting the stories, knowledge, culture, and language of the Inuit and of Northern Canada, and they publish a range of books for children and adults that include contemporary and historical fiction, folklore and legends retold and beautifully illustrated, and non-fiction on history, science, and arctic life. 

If you enjoy folklore, oral history, wintertime storytelling, or really superbly creepy mermaids, definitely check them out.

Phyllis Webstad was 6 years old when the new orange shirt she chose for her 1st day of school was stripped off her back. It was the early 70s & she was the 3rd generation to attend St. Joseph’s Residential School in Williams Lake, BC. Today is Orange Shirt Day to acknowledge the harm that Canada’s residential school system left in generations of Onkwehón:we families and communities.

Katherine Sorbey, who played my Nokumi (grandmother) in Rhymes for Young Ghouls is a residential school survivor. I’m dedicating this day to her, to my ancestors and every other family who was impacted by this genocidal system.
