I recently had the vision for a ttrpg campaign set in post empire Mandalore. So…I've drafted an outline of what it might look like for your viewing pleasure/to potentially inspire someone to run smth idk!
The Emperor is dead, his domain in tatters, as is Mandalore. The once welcoming and lively planet lies dormant, its people relegated to hovels in scattered enclaves. In the planet's darkest hour we see echoes of its past; of the ruin of war and of life's resilience. From the ashes an old vision of Mandalore is reborn. A vision of peace and prosperity. Duchess Satine may be long dead, but her ideas live on. You are amongst the few who believe in that vision, and you'll be damned if you don't try your best to make it a reality.
Potential Character Origins
The following are examples of character origins that might be interesting to explore in such a campaign and which help illustrate socio-political aspects that would be interesting to explore:
Former Minister of Satine's Government: Through crisis, coup, invasion, and erasure, you have stayed steadfast in your beliefs. A better Mandalore is possible. Perhaps with a second chance, you might transform your hopes into a lasting reality.
Former Death Watch: You once mocked her as weak, her goals a perversion of Mandalorian culture. Your fanaticism has tempered with age and now…those ideas no longer seem so quaint. After decades of conflict, maybe it is time to give peace a chance.
Former Imperial: Peace, Order, and Security. The Imperial promise to every planet under its jurisdiction. It doesn't matter what lies lead you to believing in their vision. Any pretense they once held were shattered with a single order: “execute Base Delta Zero.” Executing Mandalore's annihilation was your greatest sin. Redeeming yourself is far from possible, but maybe through your actions the planet may find redemption and prosper once more.
New Republic Emissary: The rebellion was built on hope, but there is little hope to be found amongst the survivors of Mandalore. How could there be after losing everything and everyone. Maybe…just maybe…with your help and the New Republic's backing hope can be restored to a broken people.
Scavenger Survivor: Food. Water. Shelter. Those were the only things that mattered for so long. It didn't matter what was needed to acquire those. Now though…maybe you've found something that matters.
there's def room for others too, just those are the origins that seemed cool top of mind ❤️
The main reason I introduce this concept is because I find Satine's reign the most fascinating part of Mandalorian history. Existing Star Wars media has heavily focused on stories centered on former Death Watch members, but throughout the Clone Ware they were a very small minority of the population. While they successfully executed their coup, many still would have believed in a peaceful Mandalore.
We've seen what a peaceful Mandalore could be, but we never saw what it took to get there. The Clone Wars show implied it was the result of great conflict and political turmoil, with political assassination a constant threat. You'd retrace her steps as a revolutionary, learning lessons from history, and adapting them to the present day. Throughout this journey you'll form friendships and grudges, alliances and rivalries, partnerships and competitions. But most importantly, you'll learn. Learn the forgotten secrets of the world, of the lives of its residents, of the resilience of life, of the world's ecology, of the politics of rebuilding society, of the cultures that exist and how they've evolved, etc. This is a story of rebirth, of the immortality of ideas such as peace and freedom, and as always of your own choosing. What story shall you write?
Seeing Mandalore's fate, its easy to fall into a for a false narrative of the Duchess. But its clear she wasn't naive, Mandalore was far from unprepared or defenseless against Death Watch and Civil War. There's a plot exactly on this subject where the Separatists and Death Watch try to force an occupation and through that incite insurrection. Yet this was only necessary as it was explicitly stated that Death Watch did not have the numbers nor support to stage a coup by themselves. It took a galactic conspiracy of the entire criminal underworld and two sith to bring her reign to a close. That just goes to how dramatically Mandalore had changed and how strong her governance was (speaking of she wasn't lacking in inter-planetary diplomacy either…Mandalore led the non-aligned planets throughout the entire war).
There's also so much admirable strength in her for attempting such radical change, for her vision, and for nearly getting it right. Pacifism isn't an easy ideology (despite my respect for her I reserve my own doubts), but she stuck to it with her whole heart and as a result she created something truly amazing. It'd have been easy to eliminate her enemies and chart a path through force of arms, but she managed to make things work with mostly minor limitations. Its stuff like this that feels fascinating to explore, especially in an era where politicians abscond truth and beliefs at the lightest hint of the wind turning, and where fascism and violence weasels its way into the heart of many. It'd be nice to explore a brighter and idealistic future, and chart a path forward, albeit through the medium of story telling and fantasy.
Anyways, thanks for listening to my ted talk, stay safe and rest well ❤️
