Effy knew the conversation should have happened a long time ago, but she had been burying her feelings and her past for years now. But Trevor’s words had resonated with her, she needed to deal with her trauma in order to ever move forward. Granted, he had been hinting at her seeing a therapist in order to work through her problems, he probably hadn’t meant she should unload everything onto Sarah. But here they were, and once she started speaking she found that she couldn’t stop. After everything the two of them had been through together, Sarah had deserved to know what she was holding on to. To understand why Effy was who she was.
They had sat together on the couch, facing each other, and Effy took solace in holding Sarah’s hand as she shared everything with her. She had started at the beginning, with the arranged marriage she had refused and Jonathan, the man she had loved who had paid for it. She told her about Tristan and Evelyn, how she had never told them how she felt about them, and how she had lost them. Even while she cried she found comfort in the reassurance of Sarah squeezing her hand, listening with no judgement. After a moment’s silence she finally spoke up again, her eyes meeting Sarah’s. “I’m afraid to tell you I love you. Because the people I love always die. And I’m terrified to lose you…I don’t think I would survive it.” She admitted with a weak laugh. “I do love you though, more than anything in the world.” There was no taking the words back, and she didn’t want to. Especially when she saw the look on Sarah’s face and heard her say it in turn. She can only smile through her tears and lean in to kiss her, and everything else disappears.
