4. "You broke my heart and all you can say is sorry?" with Steve?
He sits rigid in his seat, hands clasped in front of him but even you can still see the tremors. The taut lines of his forearms straining, jaw muscle jumping as he clamps his teeth down.
It sickens you that you’ve given him this reason to withdraw.
“Steve, I— I’m sorry.” It’s nowhere near close enough to encompass what you really want to say, but it’s all you can manage as your throat tightens.
“You broke my heart and all you can say is sorry?”
His voice is stony, detached, and you hate that you’ve been the one to do this to him.
A helpless half-shrug that has him scoffing, pushing up from the couch with his hands on his thighs. A seat beside you given up so he can turn his back to you. Out of sight, his eyes squeeze shut as they burn. A harsh swallow and a shuddering breath.
Behind him, a quiet sniffle as you lose your nerve, and it takes everything in him not to scoff. He’s angry, hurt, yes, but he isn’t cruel. He knows this isn’t easy for you, either, but a large part of him doesn’t really give a shit how you feel. All he knows is that his heart feels dead in his chest, a leaden weight there that makes him feel low.
He winces at your shaky, sharp inhale, the scuff of your shoes on his carpeted floor. The quiet click of the door is deafening, but no more so than the silence that settles around him once you’re gone.
Alone now, Steve grits his teeth, winds up, and puts a hole through his bedroom wall.
