Secrets and lies that eats you alive
It’s the excuses you give to avoid social niceties. Your “I am fine” was a lie when someone asked you if you were okay. You just didn’t trust them enough to share. A friend who misunderstands you for being reserved, not knowing that you are just cautious and guarded. Someone invaded your safe space years ago, and your hands are still empty to this day. You are detached and defensive. You hide your unshared secrets and break the sly mirror at night. They never accepted your complexities, only pretended to. But you see the facade breaking down slowly as you listen to the tales they share about you behind your back. You are ambivalent and lost. You despise the things that once comforted you. Frustration builds as you can't see behind the masks. Unable to remove your own mask, sadness creeps in. The delicate bonds that you constructed over the years start crumbling to the ground. The monsters get the best of you, and suddenly, you start collecting bricks and stones to make the wall higher and stronger.

“In Paris… the big shops… practically every one of them provides what are called accessories of dress: that is, fancy little articles that add to the attractiveness of the costume.”

That a book on Sewing for Profit from 1924 would need to identify the term accessories tells you that it was a relatively new use of the word. Then the book explained that the word covered the things we think of today like scarfs, belts, and bags, as well as the things we don’t usually think of today like collars and cuffs, flowers and vestees. The larger range of items in 1924 tells you something about the shift in our style vocabulary since then.
This book was put out by the Woman’s Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences and it was Mary Brooks Picken who wrote all of the first books for the correspondence courses on dressmaking.
