I was wearing my Ellie shirt and ice cream hoodie the other day and I witnessed a kid do a double take when he realized what they were.

The look on his face was 100% “MY PEOPLE”.

Here's some life advice:

I met with someone today who regarded the following advice rather highly and enthusiastically so maybe it’ll be helpful to you as well. This person is about to be a sophomore in college and I told them:

If you’re searching for a feeling of a job well-done, you have to be the one to create your own measurements of success. You can’t wait for someone else to let to you know when you’ve succeeded, especially after you leave school. Your boss will probably not give you grades or gold stars for the work you are expected to do - because you’re paid to do it.

Nobody will validate your uniqueness as much as your parents, so appreciate them for their enthusiasm but realize their support is anomalous.

Work a job for at least 3 months full time where you take orders from others and clean a toilet that isn’t yours. Seriously. Clean up someone else’s shit. Do it. It’s the most important job you will ever have because it will teach you what a shitty job is all about. Everything else afterwards is manageable, and if you can find enjoyment in that sort of environment you are leagues ahead of people who have coasted into fortune.

Life is unpredictable in every sense of the word. Embrace uncertainty. Welcome change. Learning is awkward and growing is painful, but those things are not to be avoided. Challenge yourself intellectually and socially, and the payoff takes the form of humility and appreciation. Value those traits. They shape you like the malleable person you are.

Lastly, DFTBA. That phrase will help you meet friends and form bonds with strangers in a way that was unheard of ten years ago. We are riding a wave of social unity and it’s a beautiful phenomenon to be a part of.
