Feeling so thrown by the last episode. I thought I was seeing the arc they were going for and understood the character changes they were making and…. I’m less sure now lmao. Hoping the second half of this arc brings it safely back down, but shiiiiit how

which is even More insane seeing how he gives up flint for madi. in more ways than one. like Um. Guy who won’t sacrifice himself in any meaningful way to achieve a theoretically achievable goal but will (albeit with great hesitation) give up his creator (which is in a way akin to cutting off a limb, but lets not get into that) for the chance at an impossible dream. Guy who damns himself to suffering eternally for the possibility of a taste of a reality that he has assured by his own actions will never come.

and to be clear he does not deserve the impossible future he’s killing flint for. he does not deserve the future he’s severing his ties with the living for. he’s giving up something that never belonged to him that he never wanted that he never believed in. he’s setting fire to madi’s future to lock her with him in his ivory tower and not only does it not work but it never would have. and he did it anyway.

daniel is floundering because he’s relapsed and he has transformational trauma and lestat is a brat, yes all of that is true. but this shit with lestat is also not his preferred mode of interview. in iwtv 1.1 he says “i do my best work one-on-one”, partially to get fake rashid/ armand out of the room, but also because it’s true. he’s an investigative journalist, not a documentarian, nor does he do “puff portraiture” (also 1.1). cut to 3.3 and he not only has a whole crew watching him try desperately not to look like he’s doing a puff portrait documentary, but he’s conducting the interview through an “interrotron”, a screen with disembodied heads mounted in front of the person he’s “interviewing” except it isn’t an interview, it’s an interrogation (it’s in the name of the device!). this situation couldn’t get more impersonal, couldn’t be more out of his depth, and it’s happening in front of a room of 40 professionals whose time are being wasted because daniel suddenly can’t do the job that’s been his lifeline, the ONLY constant in his world, for 50 years. AND armand won’t talk to him. that old man is about to throw a tantrum and i cannot wait

My favorite thing about Armand is that, beyond being scary and intimidating in an ancient vampire way, he’s also weird and off putting in a way that feels both hilarious and endearing. He does things that no other vampire in existence would ever consider. Goes through a divorce and proceeds to join AA because of his love for steps and rituals? Brilliant! Deranged! Lovely! Dresses up as Louie’s employ so he can wait hand and foot on the man he’s been secretly in love with for 50 plus years? That’s innovative in its insanity! He’s mimicking human behavior in ways never before conceived of and doing a piss poor job at it! It’s awkward and charming, and ironically, the most human thing about him.

Something I hold in deep regard about the vampire chronicles is that they are in no way shape or form AllGood. The author has said crazy and weird shit, the books and protagonists are full of batshit, gross, morally corrupt, societally icky ideas and actions. The structure of the books are set up in a way to emphasize the lies and mistruths while throwing any kind of certainty or objectivity out the window. There is no way for these things to be good or satisfying or irreproachable or comfortable for everyone, maybe anyone. They contain infinite multitudes, endless mysteries, ever-present horrors.
