Artist Statement- Sarah Salinas
So often we see the āperfect photoā posted to an Instagram or facebook account of someone posing near a place they went, object they saw, or person they met up with. When we see these photos we see a highlight reel of that persons life, trip, day and so on is like. The in-betweens are the times we donāt get exposed to through these various social media platforms and often become overlooked, which is why I decided to photograph some in-between moments from a trip I took in order to highlight some funny, weird, relaxed, or exciting moments that go left unshared since they Ā arenāt the āperfect photoā worth the most amount of ālikesā or ācommentsā.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā In the process of this project I wanted to attend as many events or be in every place I knew something would be going on full of opportunity to catch people off-guard. In this I found that so much went on between posed photos. I found families losing their kids, men showing off their giant bellies in hopes of winning belly flop competitions, men savaging to give overpriced rides for money, people forgetting that sunscreen is important, huge families going way overboard for a birthday, and so on. The things that arenāt often shared online but are apart of their days that is kept unphotographed. This is what inspired me most in creating my content.
#3- belly flop competition. These are the contestants waiting their turn to show off how intense they could belly flop. I loved the differences in the people competing and how excited they were to participate.
This photo is humorous to me because without context, you wouldnāt know what was happening. This was taken during a āperfect coupleā game show where the task was to get an apple up to the two foreheads without using hands.
For this photo I noticed a woman struggling to take a photo with the sunset due to the vigorous wind blowing this day. She was trying to capture the beauty behind her, but instead she couldnāt get her dress and hair to cooperate and gave up.
Final Project Proposal 2
For my final project I had an initial proposal to photograph dancers, but after running into some walls I decided to change my proposal. Iād like to focus on the candid life of others enjoying vacation. This would focus on capturing moments in between moments. Before a big show, before the photograph is ready to be taken, in the middle of transitioning to another moment and so forth.
Art Event-
I took advantage of going to the Dallas Art Fair last weekend and came out with a richer interest in art. My mother has worked in an art museum for years now and I never truely appreciated the art in her museum, but walking around this art fair I was able to connect with pieces, be intrigued by the art, and see things differently. I really enjoyed all the fair has to offer, the hundreds of pieces, the atmosphere, the people, and more.
It was difficult to find true photography/new media but I did make out a few in the crowd. One that really stood out to me was āwhite narcissus in orangeā by ValĆ©rie Belin. (Third photo). I love the overlapping of photographs and the intention behind the photo. She has merged her still life photography with that of models into one.
At first glance I hadnāt realized all the work to be done in this piece, but after taking a closer look I could see the layering and stacking that had to be done. It reminds me something of a magazine cover, but better. I enjoy the color palette as well as the photographs themselves.
Passage-
This video shows the kids Iāve been teaching for about 8 months now. They came into my class never have danced before, and now they walk in so excited to get moving. Theyāre learning slowly but one day theyāll look back at this class and think of it as the start of something they love. ā„ļø
Reading 3
I really enjoyed this reading and all that it covered. I was most interested in hearing about how the students created the map showing the places with higher volume of photos taken and how that reflects the location. Photography is at a point where it grows and changes each day, it has become much more casual and frequent now more than ever. We often times take our phones out in class and snap a picture of the blog post for the next week, not thinking anything of it. I loved reading about how many photographs are uploaded daily to social media accounts, how they are positioned specific ways, how they are edited easier than before, and how they leave their mark. It makes me wonder how will photographers keep up with this growth and remain an important part of business when individuals can pull out their own high quality phone cameras and take the same picture as an expensive camera and have no training what so ever.Ā
Final Project Draft/ 3.11.19
For my final project Iād like to either do a photo series of dancers and what their favorite style of dance is. Iād like to experiment with different shutter speeds to catch movement in action or still shots of each dancer. I also have an idea to film the dancers performing their best style dance and showcasing their strengths. Iād like to use bright colors that fill the photos with livelihood and positivity. I think this is an idea I will love not only as a project but as a way to experiment with the different dancers in my community.
Fairytale Recreation~
For this blog I wanted to take a twist on the Cinderella fairytale and turn it into something that might happen in todayās society. Instead of a princess running away to her chariot I decided to have the male run away toward his lyft car. I kept the idea of the stairs and shoe left behind but set the male in a movie theatre entrance as to bring reality to dates today.
Positivity. Something people often lose, something that comes last in our days, something that is forgotten. So many people get wrapped up on all the things that go wrong that they forget all that went right or even all that showed light in their day. I want to capture some light in my days and positive moments that uplift my spirits through this project. Just a reminder that the glass is always half full.
Photomontage- DOGS- Sarah Salinas
My dog has been apart of my life for 6 years and has helped me through so much so I decided to use her as my focal point in this assignment. I feel that dogs are such a big part of life and that they provide humans with so much love and support and wanted to bring that happiness to this photomontage. I want to embrace that love they bring and show others just how sweet they are.
LIGHT- Sarah Salinas
This one I went out and took a few of an interesting structure that created these really cool shadows from the bright sun. Then I was inspired as I saw a window letting in just enough light but not too much.
