"It's time for a meaningful, nation-wide conversation about mental health"

Although I don't agree with everything in this article or the way it has been explained, I do appreciate that it is bringing attention to the extremely important issue of mental health in the United States.

Regardless of your feelings on gun control, this country must take steps to change the way mental illness is treated. Many families with mentally ill members cannot receive appropriate care and with state-run treatment centers few and far between, prison has now become the last resort. Mental illness should NOT be treated as a crime. 

The root of the problem lies with the fact that the United States is only paying attention to those mentally ill patients with criminal charges and using prison as a solution. The unfortunate truth is that "our society, with its stigma on mental illness...does not provide 'families' with other options" and it is an issue that must be addressed.

Today I saw her, the proud tree. Her burned leaves spread out below and around her. She was swaying to and fro. She was wailing. Or... Was she dancing? Madame, you have lost your clothes. Madame. I wondered if she suffered her losses. Little bits of joy scattered at her feet. Her life. Her memories. Her buds now open, lifted and fallen. We are the tree. The leaves our life. Let us live abundantly and let us die magnificently, knowing that we are all the while growing tall and strong and reaching always, always to the light.
