It's everybody, I mean. Everything everybody does is so--I don't know--not wrong, or even mean, or even stupid, necessarily. But just so tiny and meaningless--and sad-making. And the worst part is, if you go bohemian or something crazy like that, you're conforming just as much as everybody else, only in a different way.

I like living, breathing better than working...my art is that of living. Each second, each breath is a work which is inscribed nowhere, which is neither visual nor cerebral, it's a sort of constant euphoria.
marcel duchamp
The gaps are the thing. The gaps are the spirit's one home, the altitudes and latitudes so dazzingly spare and clean that the spirit can discover itself for the first time like a once-blind man unbound. The gaps are the clefts in the rock where you you cower to see the back parts of God; they are the fissures between mountains and cells the wind lances through, the icy narrowing fjords splitting the cliffs of mystery. Go up into the gaps. If you can find them; they shift and vanish too. Stalk the gaps. Squeak into a gap in the soil, turn, and unlock -- more than a maple -- a universe. This is how you spend this afternoon, and tomorrow morning, and tomorrow afternoon. Spend the afternoon. You can't take it with you.

being sick on sunday mornings isnt so bad when you have dunk'n donuts coffee and life aquatic is on tv. i forgot how much i love this movie and soundtrack.
I love Julian Schnabel. Click here for more of his pieces.
These photographs show the remodeled New York City home of photographer Carter Smith. From House & Garden (back in the good days before it vanished) and photographed by Martyn Thompson, found here:Â Habitually Chic.
On another note, i'm sick again. Its the annoying kind too. Either way, I plan on medicating, bundling up, and reading Jitterbug Perfume. Today is my last day to myself. Rush starts tomorrow... there are many things I'd rather do than participate in rush and they all involve personally causing myself physical pain.
Our life is a faint tracing on the surface of mystery. The surface of mystery is not smooth, any more than the planet is smooth; not even a single hydrogen atom is smooth, let alone a pine. Nor does it fit together; not even the chlorophyll and hemoglobin molecules are a perfect match, for, even after the atom of iron replaces the magnesium, long streamers of disparate atoms trail disjointedly from the rims of the molecules' loops. Freedom cuts both ways. Mystery itself is as fringed and intricate as the shape of the air in time. Forays into mysteries cut bays and fine fiords, but the forested mainland itself is implacable both in its bulk and in its most filigreed fringe of detail. "Every religion that does not affirm that God is hidden," said Pascal flatly, "is not true."

resolutions
i did make resolutions this year, and they are thrillingcool:
but they only started today because ive been driving in between states:
1. drink as much water as diet coke
2. No fast food: I've creeped myself out about processed foods/sketchy food and cancer. and i want to be unarguably healthy for once. before freaking out on me though, i would like to add that i will still eat at chick-fil-a, but it will be a salad, wrap, or chicken salad sandwich. Subway is obviously not, fast food, and we will continue being forever friends. lets see if i can make it to lent.
3. work out/yoga/pilates every day. my stress level will be extremely high this semester and eating right and working out will help ensure that im nice to the people i love.
4. i also want to start taking vitamin D supplements.
I offer you that kernel of myself that I have saved, somehow —the central heart that deals not in words, traffics not with dreams and is untouched by time, by joy, by adversities.
jorge luis borges
the sight of the huge world put mad ideas into me, as if i could wander forever, see strange and beautiful things, one after the other to the world’s end. the freshness and wetness all about me made me feel that i had misjudged the world; it seemed kind and laughing, as if its heart also danced.

it is impossible to convey the life-sensation of any given epoch of one's existence--that which makes its truth, its meaning--its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream--alone.
heart of darkness
andrew zuckerman is one of those fantastic people who you hope brushes off on you some day. his books: bird, wisdom, and creature (above) are my favorites. i think its hard to have your own artistic wake these days, when photography is ubiquitous and images are becoming oppressively obtuse, but zuckerman, on the other hand, makes it look easy. everything is edenic, pure–– conveyed with clarity of vision--that photographic moment that need not be manipulated. the subject transforms before the lens, not after.
Whether he knew of this deficiency himself I can't say. I think the knowledge came to him at last--only at the very last. But the wilderness found him out early, and had taken vengeance for the fantastic invasion. I think it had whispered to him things about himself which he did not know, things of which he had no conception till he took counsel with this great solitude--and the whisper had proved irresistibly fascinating. It echoed loudly within him because he was hollow at the core.
And for a moment it seemed to me as if I also was buried in a vast grave full of unspeakable secrets. I felt an intolerable weight oppressing my breast, the smell of the damp earth, the unseen presence of victorious corruption, the darkness of an impenetrable night.
