Sarah, What is this?? Should I be worried about my kids playing nearby? (November 2015, Snohomish County, WA)
Thanks for the picture! Identifying fungi is hard without ecological information, a spore print, a cut, and sometimes a microscope. Because of its brilliant orange color, shape, and that its growing in your backyard in the fall, this beautiful fungus is likely Orange Peel Fungus, also known as Orange Fairy Cup Fungus (Aleuria aurantia). This fungus is not poisonous, but I would always recommend to keep your children away from all mushrooms (unless you picked them up at the grocery). There is a great article on this fungus at http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/fungus-lichen/orange-peel-fungus.htm.
