I posted this on Twitter yesterday and it blew up. I didnāt think it was that big of a deal. I was just joking about some of the crap that you have to deal with as a female comedian. This list isnāt aĀ āhow toā or the rules for success - in fact itās a critique of all the things people, society, and industry types tell you to do along the way. It is a giant middle finger to all those ideas. But apparently, this realllly bothered a lot of men. They were upset that I was suggesting men āhave it easy.ā See, they betray their ignorance when they say such things: because the first item on the list, āBe Funnyā - is HARD AS FUCK to figure out, and even harder to turn into an actual career - no matter who you are. The list doesnāt suggest that itās easy for men; itās just pointing out the added background noise that women have to deal with. Any successful female comic is not āproofā that this list is wrong; in fact, she is proof that itās right. Every successful female comic overcame these things and had to be about 10 times stronger because of them. Most of them have openly talked, joked, and written about these various issues.Ā āFunny is funnyā is not the appropriate response to this post. Sorry, well-meaning Actually Man.
I am being told I am making this up, that Iām whining too much; that Iām a sexist; that Iām the source of the problem; that Iām a bitch, annoying, a child; Iām ugly; that Iām a failure and making excuses for it; that a man should cum on my face. As if every other week we donāt see a new article about the DOWN trend of female roles and jobs in my industry; as if we donāt keep finding out weāre getting paid less than our male counterparts; as if womenās bodies and humanity arenāt under constant attack. Theyāre acting like I posted a video of myself beheading a man and screaming out āKILL THE MEN! THE REVOLUTION IS UPON US!ā Turns out these men telling me to āman upā are just so incredibly fragile.
Check out my mentions on twitter to see some of these knuckle-dragging boneheads wailing about something they do not, not even a little bit, understand. The good news is, lots of nice, smart people have said nice, smart things. Just another day of being a woman with thoughts on the internet.
